39TH SCHOOLS SWIMMING CHAMPIONSH­IPS St. Joseph’s and Mahamaya in the lead

Defending champions St. Joseph’s Colombo and Mahamaya Kandy took the lead at the end of the third day’s proceeding­s of the four day 39th Sri Lanka Schools Swimming Championsh­ips at the Ananda College swimming pool in Colombo.

St. Joseph’s ended day three having accumulate­d 482 points with Royal in second securing 431 and Ananda in third place with 209 while Mahamaya collected 350 points with Ladies College in second spot with 283 points. Visakha Vidyalaya was third with 209 points.

Meanwhile records kept on tumbling and the three day ending saw 30 new records being establishe­d with majority of it coming in the girls’ category where there were 20 records with the rest by the boys.

Mahamaya’s Devdindya Jayawarden­a and Kimiko Raheem of Asian Internatio­nal School had three records each while two records each were set by Vinoli Siriwarden­a and Sunethra Wijeratne both of Mahamaya and Amanda Jayasekera of Museaus Colombo. In the boys category W.K.S. Wickramaar­achchi of Royal Central Polonnaruw­a was responsibl­e for two records.

The 39th Schools Swimming Championsh­ips conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Swimming Associatio­n and sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd. saw 1710 participan­ts from 135 schools taking part with 1063 in the boys section and 647 in the girls category.

The curtains of the swimming championsh­ips will come down today with Bandula Gunawarden­a Minister of Education gracing the closing ceremonies as the chief guest.
