AIS shines at the Inter International Chess Tournament

-

Asian International School propelled itself to glory by bagging four board prizes at the recently concluded Inter International Chess Tournament organized by Lyceum International School Nugegoda, which took place on June 23 and 24.

Tharindu Withanage and Sandalu Widyalankara achieved the best performance on board one in the under 17 and under 14 categories respectively, while Aswin Kumar and Ajay Kumar achieved the best performance on board two in the under 17 and under 12 categories respectively. The AIS Under 17 team missed the overall third place by just 1.5 points.

This success shows the continuous progression of chess at AIS. With the constant support given by the teacher in charge, Mrs. Prabhica de Zoysa, and the coach, Mr. Mohideen, the chess club now has over 50 members.

In the past, the Chess Captain Tharindu Withanage and the Junior Chess Captain Sandalu Widyalankara have won in the Western Province and the All Island Chess Tournaments organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka. They have also won at several International Rating Chess Tournaments and have qualified to compete at events such as the Asian Junior Chess Championship. In the meantime, the Captain, Tharindu also has an international fide rating.

The players are confident that chess will soar to greater heights at AIS and that more chess champions will eventually emerge.
