Tangalle Boys standing tall in Hambantota

-

Tangalle Boys National School is proud to be the only boys’ school in Hambantota District. It has done extremely well in both education and sports.

Established in 1879, the school was known as Christ- Church College and Rev. Father C. A. W. Jayasekara was the first Principal and administrator of the college. Initially it was a boys’ college but later it became a mixed school. The years between 1827 and 1956 was a particularly constructive period for this school as education was provided in the English medium, which produced prominent scholars to the nation.

This school possesses a long and glorious history and recently celebrated its 125th anniversary to show off its grandeur. So everybody sacrificed their time and shared their experiences in this tremendous task in moulding useful citizens for society.

Under the new educational reforms, many new measures have been taken to uplift the standard of education from grade 6 to 13, both in the Sinhala and English medium.

At present, with over 1500 students, 60 teachers and about 15 support staff, the school has a wellplanned administrative system to achieve its educational goals. The school has provided facilities to the stu- dents to study in the mathematics, science, agriculture, commerce and art s t reams at the Advanced Level. The present principal is Mr. N.G. Gaminidasa

Tangalle Boys’ National School provides several facilities to students both in academic and extracurricular activities. A wellequipped computer laboratory provides the students with the opportunity to study information technology and web designing, fields in which students may opt to continue their higher education. Under the supervision of well- trained computer staff, all students from grade 6 to 13 receive a sound knowledge of computer technology.

Tangalle Boys’ National School is well-reputed for sports, particularly athletics, within the Hambantota district. Talented students, selected from the interschool sports meet, are given systematic training for national level competitions.

The under 13 and under 17 school cricket teams and the under 17 and under 19 volleyball teams have brought fame to the school by winning a number of tournaments in the area.

Tangalle boys’ National School has given students the opportunity to acquire knowledge in various disciplines and to show their hidden talents, skills, leadership qualities etc.The school prefect board is a fine example of that. In the prefect board, talented students act as junior and senior prefects bearing responsibilities in every field of the school’s administrative sys- tem.

Cadetting is another field in which the school is reputed throughout the district and it is proud to be a partner in producing brave youths to the battlefield.

The school environment brigade has taken up the responsibility of cleanliness and making the school a pleasant place for all.

Under the guidance of the present principal, Mr. N. G. Gaminidasa, Tangalle Boys’ National School has begun a new era of progress. The vision of the school is “enhancing the inborn talents of the child and make him a fruitful citizen to the society”.
