Bringing in Graphic Design Talent for Advertising Industry:
Nisal Attanayake – AOD Graduate at Colombo’s Advertising Giant Grants McCann Erickson
Following a dream of becoming a successful designer is a tough oneespecially in Sri Lanka where the creative industries are still developing. However, Nisal Attanayake was determined to become a creative professional in the local advertising industry. Nisal who was originally from Thulhiriya, moved to Colombo to commence his dream career in advertising. Through this experience Nisal understood the importance of sharpening his crea- tivity with specialized design education.
Joining AOD’s internationally renowned graphic design degree programme was Nisal’s chosen path to move forward in the ad industry. “I didn’t have a design education background when I first moved to Colombo and started advertising. In the AOD graphic degree programme, I learned a lot about design, typography, illustration, conducting advertising campaigns, packaging and advertising industry practices”, says Nisal. “Applying this knowledge to my work improved the quality of my work and also helped me in a career at Grants McCann Erickson – one of Sri Lanka’s most successful ad agencies,” he adds.
Nisal enjoys his work at Grants; an organization with a challenging and enriching work environment that inspires creative minds. “I’ve worked on several projects for Grants. My favourite one up-to-date is the campaign that I worked on for Rocell - niche Insignia campaign; this will be released next month.” Nisal thanks AOD for giving him a design education that placed him on par with global advertising professionals. “My degree education at AOD has helped me to become more engaged and committed towards work than I used to be. It helped me to value deadlines, work as a team and keep improving continuously –all very important things for a designer in advertising.”
