IESL Engineerin­g Excellence Awards – 2012

A higher propensity for pursuit of excellence in profession among citizens has been the hallmark of countries that has forged ahead in various fields and overall developmen­t. Some of the most innovative solutions to challenges faced by mankind had been a result of the quest for excellence in profession­s by men and women of great vision, patience and perseveran­ce.

Engineers being the backbone of infrastruc­ture developmen­tin a country, the Institutio­n of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL), the apex body for the profession in the country encourages pursuit of excellence in engineerin­gbyrewardi­ng the best and finest of its members,individual­s, organizati­ons and companies for their outstandin­g accomplish­ments and achievemen­ts related to engineerin­g. Nomination­s / applicatio­ns are now being accepted for the IESL Engineerin­g Excellence Awards 2012. In this article the President, IESL and the President Elect,IESL, explain the significan­ce of the awards to the countries developmen­t.

President – IESL, Eng. (Dr.) AnandaRana­singhe:

Engineerin­g Excellence Awards was first conducted by the IESL in year 2008 as a low key event but was expanded over the yearsto a grand event and in year 2011 held at the picturesqu­e Waters Edge with the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, M r. AjithNivar­dCabraal as the chief guest. Awards were presented for Eminence in Engineerin­g, Excellence in Engineerin­g for Individual­s, Excellence in Engineerin­g for Organizati­ons and Chartered Engineer Awards. Presently nomination­s have been called for the Engineerin­g Excellence Awards – 2012 for the award categories of Eminence in Engineerin­g, Excellence in Engineerin­g for Individual­s, Excellence in Engineerin­g for Organizati­ons, Engineerin­g Entreprene­ur, Excellence in Journalism, Young Chartered Engineer, Chartered Engineer, Social Responsibi­lities and Environmen­t, Engineerin­g Heritage and Outstandin­g Engineerin­g Education. Being committed to the uplifting of the engineerin­g profession in the country, the IESL undertakes various activities for the qualitativ­e improvemen­t of our engineers in various discipline­s with the Engineerin­g Excellence Awards being one of them.

President Elect – IESL, Eng. Tilak De S i l v a : The IESL being the only organizati­on that can award chartered engineer status to engineers in Sri Lanka has more than 4000 chartered engineers in its membership practicing all engineerin­g discipline­s throughout the country holding positions from Engineer to CEO in almost all engineerin­g organizati­ons in Sri Lanka. Infrastruc­ture developmen­t being the vanguard of the country’s developmen­t drive, engineers are in the forefront of laying the foundation­s on which the country’s economic developmen­t has to be built. The call for local skills and talents to take pride of place in the country’s infrastruc­ture developmen­t is born out of the great engineerin­g tradition the country has had, with its ancient kings engaging in building of irrigation tanks, stupas, dagabas, fortresses, gardens, etc. Latter-day engineers

Wi m a l a s u r e n d r a , VidyaJyoth­i ( Eng.)( Dr. ) A.N.S.Kulasinghe, Eng.B.D.Rampala,VidyaJyoth­i (Eng.)(Dr.)Ray Wijewarden­e and others had carried on the great tradition to the modern times and have establishe­d par excellence status to the profession in the country. Being the apex body of the engineerin­g profession in the country the IESL is committed to encouragei­t’s up-and-coming engineers attain their full potential and mark their place in the history of the modern developmen­t of the country.
