The official launching of Herzing University degree programmes in affiliation with Horizon Campus was held on the 22ndof May 2013, with the Minister of Higher Education S.B.Dissanayake, gracing the occasion as the chief guest. Herzing University’s President, Renée Herzing, Mr. Thomas Haynes, Director of International Operations for Herzing University and Dr. Priyantha Premakumara, Additional Secretary to the University Grants Commission, were also amongst the distinguished guests, who attended this ceremony

he Minister, while reminiscing the inauguration of Horizon Campus Malabe, had this to say, “….Good Evening Ladies & Gentleman, It is my great pleasure to be with you here today, celebrating another milestone in the journey of Horizon Campus. Since its inception more than two years ago, I am very pleased to see that Horizon Campus has steadily grown in stature, providing for many degree programmes, from the University of London & Karnatake State Open University. Today it has taken another very important step in affiliating with Herzing University from the USA, which is a prestigious, recognized and accredited Higher Education institution, delivering a range of degree programmes to a larger student community across the country.

Horizon commenced its journey in the field of education 4 years back, with the international school, in Malabe, and eventually the campus programmes one year later. It is to the credit of the Management of Horizon Campus, that they have had the vision of providing opportunities for students to fulfill their educational dreams, commencing from the junior school, secondary and degree completion. It was with this vision that Horizon has steadily grown with 2 BSc degrees & an MSc from Karnataka State Open University & 7 BSc degrees & LL.B. from the University of London being offered, in its state of the art facilities in Malabe & Colombo. I’m indeed pleased to have been part of this journey thus far”.

The Minister was also to emphasize the need for International degree programmes in the country, and the availability of institutions such as Horizon City campus, within the local context, “….International degree providers in Sri Lanka are many. If anything I believe it has been an asset to the national education sector, rather than being a bane to it. As we are all aware, not all gets an opportunity of entering the local university system, thus creating a plethora of issues for students who failed to enter the University system. It is indeed here that the international degree providers/ institutions have assisted such a student population, by providing opportunities in varied areas of study. I believe that there is a general consensus that International education is important and vital in providing the sufficiently qualified manpower requirements that the government & private sectors require in our goals of national development. It is my firm belief that students who are exposed to the expectations &rigors of an international programme would also have the opportunities of utilizing such experiences, within a Sri Lankan context.

In this context I believe that Horizon Campus have taken all necessary steps to achieve its lofty ideals of providing international Standard higher education to the youth of this country, to provide a varied field of degree Indeed, I have to say it is very heartening to see that Horizon Campus has been considerate of students from all walks of life, be it urban, suburban or village, in providing educational courses to fit in with their career desires and means of affordability. I’m convinced that the affiliation with Herzing University, encapsulates this vision in providing easily accessible, convenient and an affordable mode of study for students from any area of Sri Lanka. My heartiest congratulations, to Mr. Upul Daranagama, the management, staff and academic staff for a job well done, thus far.
