Colombo FC defeat Cops to regain momentum

- - DS

Colombo FC, last year’s table leaders who suffered a surprise loss against minnows Super Sun last week in the Dialog Champions League 2014, bounced back in commanding style by inflicting a 3-1 defeat over Police.

Colombo FC’s players combined perfectly and set about attacking their opponents right from the beginning of the game. This resulted in a multitude of scoring opportunities and the Policemen should consider themselves lucky that they did not have to pick the ball out the back of their net more than just thrice.

Meanwhile, Colombo’s most recent conquerors Super Sun- who embarrassed them 3-0- added to their outstanding run by beating former Dialog Champions Renown 2-1 at Kelaniya, after things were tied at halftime. Super Sun’s two wins serve as a warning signal to all the other teams within the competition that they are not a side to be taken lightly.

Java Lane was also among the goals as they journeyed to Wennapuwa to send New Youngs spiraling to a 2-1 loss.

Elsewhere, the Kurunegala Pelicans could not manufacture any goals but they nevertheless played a good game to hold former champions Don Bosco 0-0 at home in Negombo.

In other action, newcomers Thihariya were less lucky in Anuradhapura as they fell to a much-fancied Solid at the Gampaha grounds.

Visiting Kalutara, the Upcountry Lions gave a spirited display in front of thousands of home fans to hold Blue Star 1-1. Both teams played aggressive football while their respective goalkeepers, despite being kept constantly busy, staved off danger with several fine saves.
