“Psychology” The Most Job Oriented Degree

-

What can I do with a Psychology Degree?

A simple response to the above question might be, “just about anything that involves working with people.” The study of Psychology is an excellent preparation for many rewarding careers, professions and post graduate options in both Sri Lanka and overseas. Psychology is best defined as the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes. It gives us the skills and knowledge to help ourselves and others.

The field of Psychology has become one of the most attractive and exciting career choices today. The recent increase in alcoholism, suicide rates and youth unease together with psychological disorders caused by war, tsunami and other natural disasters are clear indications of the urgency and the demand for more practical and hands-on psychology education in Sri Lanka. A degree in Psychology can lead to many rewarding careers in Health and Wellness, Marriage/ Family Counseling, Medicine, Relief and Social Work, Human Resources, Non Government Organizations (NGO), Organizational Development, Training & Development, Marketing and many more.

Limited higher education options in Psychology prevented Sri Lankan students from enjoying the benefits of this rewarding career in the past. Students were compelled to continue non-university qualifications with limited recognition and value. Advantages of a university Psychology degree are many. The most important aspect is the global and local recognition for career advancement and option of choosing different career fields. Also students who are seeking post graduate qualifications must complete a bachelor’s degree in Psychology to entry to university programs.
