-

Swadik Suthagaran ( L) seemed to be both fascinated and amused listening to Ashok Basu CEO Axis Bank Colombo when Scholarships for USA (Pvt) Ltd arranged for a meeting before Swadik left for Montana State University in Bozeman Montana to pursue a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. Swadik from Wellawatta and an alumnus of Tr i n i t y Academy of Chennai India approached SUSA seeking assistance to enter a reputed US university with scholarship, credit transfers, part- time work and summer inter nships. Among many offers SUSA was able to attract through its partnerships with many colleges and universities across US, Swadik settled on MSU due to its reputation, quality of education, affordability, research opportunities and peaceful environment.

MSU was introduced in ‘ 07 by SUSA in its mission of making US education affordable to the largest ever segment of Sri Lankans. Mechanical Engineering at MSU is accredited by ABET certifying highest standards in US. Carnegie Foundation ranked MSU in the top tier of institutions with very high research opportunities for undergraduates. MSU is among the top ten in the nation that have received the most Goldwater Scholarships - nation’s most prestigious scholarship for undergrads studying Math, Nat u r a l Sciences and Engineering. MSU’s score of 58 equals that of John Hopkins and two more than Yale and University of Washington. MSU’s engineering graduates are recruited in large numbers by Microsoft, Boeing, Kraft, 3M etc. At the last fall’s career fair Boeing sent a team of 17 recruiters to hire MSU students for internships and jobs.

Ashok Basu, in a very inspirational half- hour spent with Swadik shared his youth and professional life and explained the importance of commitment and hard work and being honest. He urged Swadik to challenge himself constantly and push the borders and always to remember one’s roots.

SUSA, the only Lankan recruiter to place students exclusively at US colleges and universities is committed since ‘ 01 to make US education accessible and affordable to the Lankan middle class. They partner with over 30 schools across US placing nearly 300 students from many parts of the island belonging to all communities and beliefs. When asked about the assistance received from SUSA Swadik stated that he is totally satisfied. He commended about attention to detail, speed of delivery, honesty and total commitment. It’s a unique service I would recommend to anyone, he added.
