125th Anniversary Celebrations of Hillwood College Kandy

-

In celebrating the 125th birthday of Hillwood College Kandy , we have organized a cultural show “NAADA NOO PAA”, along with the harmonious collaboration of Trinity College Kandy to be performed on February 27, 2015, at the Nelum Pokuna International Theater. Proceeds from the event will be channeled to Hillwood Chapel Renovation fund. In regard to this event, the first lady former Mayor of South Asia, Mrs. Chandra Ranaraja, who is a prestigious past pupil of Hillwood College recalls and shares the history of aesthetics at Hillwood.

Progress of Kandyan dancing at Hillwood College

Kandyan dancing was introduced to the students of Hillwood in the early 1950’s under the Principalship of Mrs. S. Samarasinghe. It was the well-known Sri Lankan dancer Shri Jayana from the remote Hanguranketha hills who taught the first students. He taught the steps and movements whilst providing the drum beats. As he was a popular dancer he was unable to continue at Hillwood. Hence, he got Ransina from his family to be our instructress, which she did for over 50 years. A special felicitation was organized by the Past Pupils’ association in appreciation of her dedicated service. The dancing skills enabled Hillwoodians to raise funds for several building projects through the shows in several towns including Colombo, Matale, and Kurunegala. These were generally organized by the PPA branches. Miss. Edith Ratwatte was the Teacher-in- charge of dancing and drama and it was her organizing skills that enabled us to have concerts, festivals and to provide the dance troupe for all functions.

With such an opulent heritage Hillwood College along with Trinity College will perform in the “NAADA NOO PAA” concert. A rich splendor of Kandyan dancing and eastern music will be presented in the cultural event.
