Dhammmisar­a MMV striding forward towards success

Dhammmisar­a Madya Maha Vidyalaya is a leading school in the Chilaw Educationa­l Zone, Puttalam. The school celebrated its centenary in 2013 with great pride. This school was inaugurate­d in 1913 as the first English medium school in the North Central Province and it was renamed as Government Bilingual School in 1920. In 1958 they were able to become the first central college in the province. In 1960 the school enjoyed the harvest of producing 2 Arts stream students to university level. At that time, the school was renamed as Naththandi­ya Dhammisara Madya Maha Vidyalaya with due respect to the North Central Province Chief Incumbent Ven. Narawita Dhammisara Thera. In 1975, three science stream students entered the Medical Faculty. Gynecologi­st Dr. Kapila Gunawarden­a is one of them.

Today the school is led by W.S.S.R.M.S.S. Wijesekara and the institutio­n has 3710 students and 153 teachers.

After the first university entrance examinatio­n, the school got off to a flying start where they producing hundreds of successful students with high marks in all streams. In 2010, the G.C.E. (O/L) students were able to take the first four ranks in the Puttalam district. In the G.C.E. (A/L) examinatio­n, stu- dents were able to capture the second, third, and sixthh ranks in Arts Stream, eighth position in the Maths stream and sixth in the Commerce stream.

The Western and Eastern Band, Prefect Guild, St. John’s Ambulance Unit, Scouting and Chess units are some of the extracurri­cular activities the students have shone in. A fully equipped IT Lab and the library in the school facilitate the teaching-learning process. By winning the first place at the all island vol- leyball championsh­ip in 1981 by the school grabbed the attention of the entire island. H.A. Kithsiri Jayasekara and H.A.Channa Jayasekara got the opportunit­y to represent the National Volleyball team in 1985. The school team was able to win 5 All Island Championsh­ips and were first runners-up in 2004 and firstt runners-up in 2014. 125 teachers have worked with dedication to produce 55 players to the National Junior and Senior volleyball teams.

The school authoritie­s mentioned the names of teachers Somarathne Peiris, D. M. Dissanayak­e, H. S. Madurapper­uma and all the teachers with great gratitude for their contributi­on and coordinati­on towards the sporting success of the school.

Athlete V. Rathnakuma­ra represente­d Sri Lanka at the Asian Games in 1990 and Varuna Lakshan who obtained a Sri Lankan record in the Javelin Throw event. These are the remarkable events in their sporting history.

The Aesthetic unit of the school has done a splendid service. The Eastern music unit has obtained the second place at the all island music competitio­n in 2010 and received an award for the best music in a drama competitio­n in 2013. The dancing unit and drama and theatre units also obtained first three places in the all island competitio­ns consecutiv­ely from 2004 to 2014. In 2009 and 2012, the Drama unit obtained the Best Actress awards.

Six district championsh­ips and five camp awards have been won by the St. John’s Ambulance unit. Six students participat­ed in the internatio­nal computing competitio­ns held in Sydney, Australia.

D. W. P. Madubhasha­na won the bronze medal in the Olympiad competitio­n in 2013 and Gold and Silver in 2014. Shehan Madurawela Fernando bagged the bronze medal in the Biology Olympiad competitio­n.

With the vision of creating a comprehens­ive students enriched with competence to the global village and due the untiring efforts of the principal and staff Dhammisara Madya Maha Vidtalaya is striding forward towards success.
