The 11th Annual Invitational International Under 14 Cricket tournament conducted by the leading cricket coaching school in the country – CCC School of Cricket under the guidance of that legendary, veteran cricket coach Nelson Mendis came to a successful conclusion with the finals played last Sunday at the CCC turf amidst a responsive large crowd of schoolboys, parents and cricket enthusiasts.

At the finals CCC ‘ Maroons’ met MCA ‘ Blues’ and the CCC ‘ Maroons’ skipper winning the toss elected to bat first and were in dire straits when they collapsed to 93 for the loss of 7 wickets, after being comfortably placed at 63 for 1 at one stage. A stubborn partnership of 98 runs by no. 5 batsman and deputy skipper Movin Subasinghe and no. 9 batsman Mahima Weerakoon help the CCC team to put up a match winning total of 195 for 7 in their allotted 45 overs. Movin played an intelligent and a determined knock to stay unbeaten on 83 in 71 balls including five huge sixes and an equal number of fours while Mahima Weerakoon rose to the occasion lending valuable support to his senior partner to remain unbeaten on 26.

MCA “Blues’ in their turn were never in the hunt for victory, as CCC bowlers gave them no liberty in tying them down with accurate bowling, specially by their quartet of right and left arm spinners Anupama Herath, Mahima Weerakoon, Kaveesh Madurapperuma and Kusanka Peiris who together shared the spoils. Wickets tumbled regularly and MCA were dismissed for 128 runs in 35.3 to see the CCC “Maroons’ skipper Shehan Fernando walking away with the coveted ‘Nelson Mendis Trophy’ for the second successive year.

Dashing batsman Movin Subasinghe was adjudged the ‘Man of the Finals’ for his match winning inning of 83.

Former Sri Lanka cricketer Avishka Gunawardene was the chief guest at the finals and Hemaka Amarasuriya, Chairman Singer Sri Lanka gave away the trophies for the winners at the glittering Awards Night held at the Bishop’s College Auditorium.
