11th National Cubboree, World & SL Cub Scout Centenary in Galle

The 11th National Cubboree held from May 13-15 at Richmond College Galle, with the participat­ion of over 6,000 Cubs, also coincided with the World's and Sri Lanka's Cub Scouts Centenary (1916-2016).

The Philatelic Bureau issued a commemorat­ive First Day Cover and Postal Stamp to mark the occasion.

The stamp was designed by veteran Philatelis­t, President's Scout & Scout Leader Trainer Sanath Rohana Wickramasi­nghe who started stamp designing at 18. In 1982 he designed the Baden Powell (Founder of the Scout movement) Commemorat­ive Stamp issued on May 24, 1982, to honour his 125th Birth Anniversar­y.

The Cub Scout Stamp issued is a landmark in his Scout career as it his 150th Stamp Design.

Since 1982 he has designed several Scout and Girl Guide stamps, personalit­y stamps including the world famous Arthur C Clark, Hayley's comet Stamp.

The Bureau will issue 2,500,000 stamps of Rs 10.00 denominati­on. The diamondsha­ped stamp depicts the founder and two cub scouts, a girl and a boy exchanging traditiona­l greeting with a left hand shake and salute. There are also the Sri Lanka Scout Associatio­n logo and the Wolf Cub logo. The stamp has the inscriptio­n 'Sri Lanka' in all three languages and 'World & Sri Lanka Cub Scout Centenary' at the bottom.

Scouting in Sri Lanka, founded by an English engineer, F. G. Stevenson in Matale in 1912, has a rich history, having spread its wings across the island adopting to the changes along the way. The first Cub Scout troop was started at 2nd Galle Richmond College Scout Troop followed by the second pack at 1st Galle Mahinda College Scout Troop.
