A Professional Qualification with a degree

-

“If you fail to get university admission, you need something to do”

“Yes, yes, everyone seems to be turning towards accounting. Won’t the accounting field be overloaded?”

Not at all. The global data indicate that the future of the accounting profession is glowing and the demand for accountants is rising by the year as accountants are an essential factor to serve the complex demand of rapidly changing global business environment. In most countries there is a sizable shortage of qualified accountants. For instance, in Malaysia, there is recorded shortage of 60,000 accountants and the country’s government is offering substantial benefits to pursue the expatriate accountants to return. Unprecedented growth in China has created exploding demand for accounting professionals in the country and due to Chinese investment and projects especially in other Asian countries has permeated the demand for accounting professionals to those countries as well. India, the other developing giant in Asia together with development of many economies in the South East Asia has swelled the demand for accountants.

Though there is a lack of data in the domestic scenario, it is obvious that the number of businesses is increasing in Sri Lanka through investment from other countries such as China and India as well as owing to government initiatives. The government’s concept of creating five strategic hubs - knowledge, commercial, maritime, aviation and energy- will stimulate and enable establishing of more companies of large, medium and small scales. This, in turn, will enhance the opportunities for accounting professionals as every one of these businesses needs to be serviced by them, full or part time.

Path finding Management Accountants

Accountants of any type help the organization they work, public or private, to function properly and according to guidelines and laws. However, it is the management accountants who help companies/ organizations to find paths leading to growth and development. Because, it is they, who analyze data, make forecasts, prepare budgets, draw plans, choose & manage investments, find ways to minimize risks and guide the decision makers of the company to take informed, sound and effective decisions. Management accountants are always futurists who, by the nature of their profession, are allowed to be creative.

When you want to be creative, future looking, part of the decision making mechanism in the place you work and want to take snap shots of the future with the camera of your knowledge and present them to the management, you should consider doing management Accounting rather than financial accounting. If you are a management accountant, you will never be bored with your work as you work involves tasks that are extremely diverse compared to many other careers.

Broad Education with range of opportunities

The education to become a management accountant comprise of a broad range of subjects such as management accounting, financial accounting, strategic management, business studies, economics, human resources, taxation etc. and this will open up more than one door of career prospects for you. At a later stage, if you decide that you don’t want to be crunching numbers for the rest of your life, it is much easier to divert into another career ranging from management to research to banking and many more. The Best for you, CMA When you decide that you want to become a management accountant, the very place to look at is the Certified Management Accountants of Sri Lanka (CMA), because it will give you incomparable opportunity to gain entry to a coveted career with substantial financial rewards.
