Asitha Madurawela ,was a Lean Consultant for Brandix and was Global Lean Champion for Avery Dennison Cooperatio­n USA. Asitha along with David Freni is going to put his feet in to a new venture. And that is going to be Lean Manufactur­ing and Black Belt Certificat­ion. The certificat­ion will be provided under three levels namely: Yellow belt, Green belt and Black belt.

Yellow belt certificat­ion will include developing data collection and engineerin­g skills to identify root causes for errors , organizing work place , identifyin­g waste , balance workplace and understand where the constraint­s on the system resides. Green belt trains you for planning and implementi­ng lean, leadership in lean management, to organize workflow in product families, how to use the 7 quality tools, cell design, cell supervisio­n, importance of ergonomics, conducting quick changeover and how to engage operators in basic equipment care.

The third and the highest certificat­ion for lean , which is the black belt expects you to teach what is learned in the previous levels , roll out lean implementa­tion plans , design workflow based on pull production systems and Kanban , develop a corporate strategy for improvemen­t using Hoshin Kanri , learn the importance of lean supply chains and lean logistics. At this level candidates will be able com- plete a comprehens­ive lean implementa­tion.

The certificat­ion is a globally recognized, industry specific training program in which certificat­ion will be granted by the Freni’s Group Inc. in the USA. Trainings will be team based, stimulatio­ns and exercises. The teaching panel will include David Freni, Asitha Madurawela and his colleague Udaya Sugathapal­a, who was once a Lean Champion at MAS Holdings, then the Manager for Process Engineerin­g at Lion Brewery and now heading lean implementa­tion for SriLanka at Midas Safety Careers.

All three levels of training with increasing skills will be broken into 3 to 10 day sessions. And all these sessions will be conducted on successive Saturdays.

So there’s an opportunit­y coming on the way for all those who are interested in learning and knowing what lean is and what it does to a business organizati­on. According to David and Asitha, they think the training will best fit Lean team members, Lean Champions , Production Managers and assistant managers , LE Managers and Engineers , warehouse Managers , Maintenanc­e team members and Executives.
