The popular Singhalese Sports Club ( SSC) Tennis Tournament commenced on May 4 and it will continue until May 20 at the SSC courts in Colombo. This tournament conducted by the SSC, attracts many talented young players, and this will help them to polish their rough edges in the game.

This year there are 22 events in the tournament, 18 draws, 552 entries and 353 players are participat­ing.

The most entries have been received for the boys Under-14 Singles with 89 entries. The 22 events, are Girls and Boys Under- 12, Under- 14, Under- 16 and Under- 18 Singles and Doubles, Women’s and Men’s Singles and Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Veterans Over-35, Over-45 and Over-55 Doubles.

The games played so far have been exciting and nail biting.

Nelaka Dissanayak­e ( No. 1) beat Kavindu Perera 6- 0, 6- 0; Thushan Senanayake beat Viduna Wijebandar­a 6- 3, 6- 4; Sathika Silva beat Dulaj Wickremana­yake 6- 0, 6- 4; Wenuka Kithnula beat Ramith Herath 6- 1, 6- 2; Anupa Garumanna beat Aakash de Silva 7- 5, 7- 6; Heshika Perera beat Poorna Walisundar­a 6-1, 6- 3; Anuth Wijesinghe beat Harieshwar Parameshwa­ran 6-0, 6-0.

The quarter-final matches to be played are: Nelaka Dissanayak­e vs Thushan Senanayake, Wenuka Kithnula vs Anupa Garumanna and Anuth Wi j e s i n g h e vs Matheesha Nettasingh­e

The Girls Under- 18 Singles match results: Janali Manamperi ( No. 1) beat Prabuddhi Perera 6- 0, 6- 0; Medhani Samarasing­he (No.3) received w/ o from Pamoda Jayasekara; Tarah Grieg beat Ochithya Fernando 4-6, 6-1, 7-6; Anika Seneviratn­e ( No. 2) received w/ o from Sethara Ambewatte.

Quarter- final: Medhini Samarasing­he beat Janali Manamperi 6-0, 6-1.

The Boys Under- 1 8 Singles match results: Avindra Perera (No.1) received w/ o from Rusiru Fernando; Nuwantha Dissanayak­e beat S. Inthujan 6- 2, 7- 5; Vibuda Wijebandar­a beat Richard Samaraseka­ra 6-1, 6-0; Vikum Jayasuriya beat Ravindu Weerasingh­e 6- 4, 6- 4; Sean Sanderson beat Mihindu Samarasing­he 6- 2, 6- 2; U.
