-

Ayodhya Karunaratne is a name that resonates in the health research front of Sri Lanka namely on the subject of Physiotherapy. Having completed her 3 yearAdvanced Diploma in Physiotherapy at the International Institute of Health Sciences (IIHS), she is now continuing her academic journey at the shores of the United Kingdom where she will complete her Masters in Physiotherapy at Coventry University.

Whilst graduating from IIHS with exceptional results, Ayodhya made her mark through academic research where she was selected to present at numerous national and international research conferences. The Advanced Diploma in Physiotherapy offered by IIHS guided Ayodhya in the direction of research where the young scholar learnt the fine art of linking theory to current evidence based practice. To date, Ayodhya has presented at the Physiotherapy and Trade Conference, (United Kingdom), Annual Global Health Conference (Singapore) and the World Physiotherapy Conference, (Singapore). Additionally, her research was selected to be presented in 2015 at the research conference by Sri Lanka Medical Association. Ayodhya’s research subsequently has been highlighted and published in numerous IIHS journals which not only marks her academic feats, but also has succeeded in inspiring fellow students.Whilst proving to be one of the many all-rounder students of IIHS, to add to her list of accomplishments, the driven and talented 21 year old excelled in sport and was also an active member of the Student’s Council at IIHS. Through the IMPULSE Physiotherapy centre based in IIHS and the clinical placements offered at Asiri Central Hospital, Sri Lanka’s leading private hospital, the young student along with many colleagues were exposed to a wide variety of authentic clinical scenarios. In addition, through her curriculum at IIHS, the scholar came in contact with residents at Dewsiri Sevana, an aged care facility in Mahabagey and Prithipura Children’s Home in Wattala, an organization dedicated to care and assist children with disabilities. The variety in clinical placements offered by IIHS allows students to come into contact and experience diverse settings whist optimizing practical outcomes.

This pathway that Coventry University offers via IIHS is financially attractive for students as the cost saving aspect of the course is exceptionally noticeable. On average, to complete a course of this nature in the United Kingdom would cost a student approximately Rs. 30 Lakhs per year. However, if the student opts to follow this pathway through IIHS the entire cost for 3 years would amount to approximately Rs. 8 Lakhs. This pathway consists of a 3 year Advanced Diploma in Physiotherapy at IIHS followed by 1 year at Coventry University, UK where the student will obtain a Masters in Physiotherapy upon completion of the course.

Qualified physiotherapists can work in a wide range of community and hospital settings and have a high professional demand worldwide. Whilst being in the health industry is extremely rewarding, the salary and allowance benefits serve as an incentive for Physiotherapists to remain in the profession and serve the community for generations.

Dr. Kithsiri Edirisinghe, Deputy Chairman of IIHS states, “The studentcentric academic approach that IIHS uses, has its short term merits during the students time at IIHS, but it has proven to yield bigger results in the long term personally and professionally. Students like Ayodhya excelled in research and the scientific process, thereby outrivaling those at a similar or higher standard through her acute talent and dynamic personality. As academics it is important to create critically thinking unique students who accept challenges and are on a constant quest for information. We try to enable this process at IIHS”.

“After finishing my studies at Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya, I commenced my higher studies at IIHS which allowed me to venture into opportunities that were very unique to the area I wanted to excel in. The Sri Lankan and international lecturers guided me in the direction of research and made me reach my maximum academic potential”. – Ayodhya Karunaratne.

The saidstudent-centric approach taken by IIHS , where the definition of ‘student success’ is not purely focused on academia, but where it also focuses on methods to encourage students to think creatively and push boundaries in research and aesthetics, can be seen as a facilitator in the personal growth of a student . IIHS is one of the leading international learning centers based in Sri Lanka and has time after time demonstrated exceptional teaching standards, which makes it one of the most extraordinary academic institutes in Sri Lanka. The Advanced Diploma in Physiotherapy offered by IIHS provides a pathway toa Bachelor in Physiotherapy Degree at State University of New York, Canton, (USA) or a Masters in Physiotherapy at world renowned Coventry University (UK).

Supun Buddhi Fernando, a former student of IIHS states, “The health care world is open and waiting for us to conquer. Don’t let your fear to hold back you. IIHS has made me who I am today. If I can do it, you can too. I became a licensed PTA in SUNY Canton and I am now pursuing next level of my goal, which is to become a Doctor in Physical Therapy”.
