CEB receives an experimental setup of a wide area monitoring system
The Ceylon Electricity Board has received an experimental setup of a Wide Area Monitoring system from Canadabased ERLPhase Power Technologies (ERLPT), an ISO 9001:2008 QMS certified manufacturer of digital fault recording systems and protective relays.
At a recent event held in Colombo, two units of the system were donated to the CEB. The presentation was made by ERLPT Chief Technology Officer Dr. Krish Narendra and Dr. Collin Fernando, Managing Director of St. Theresa industries (P) Ltd (STIPL) and STIPL directors.
ERLPT has chosen St. Theresa industries (P) Ltd (STIPL) of Sri Lanka which is a well experienced Manufacturer and Supplier of Pole hardware items to CEB for more than three decades, as their local representative.
According to an STIPL media release, the system monitors records and stores measurements from critical locations such as generating stations and main load centres in a synchronised manner. This technology is employedin the United States, Canada, China, India and many European countries to successfully analyse system-wide disturbances such as blackouts.
Due to its very high resolution of the available system data, the technology is useful in the control centre to monitor the real time behaviour of the power system efficiently, and with better visualisation compared to the existing monitoring systems. With this technology supported by the common GPS satellite global reference time signal, it is easy to analyse the disturbance throughout the country. In addition, this information will be useful to pin-point the root causes and take correctivemeasures to prevent such events in the future. Furthermore, implementation of such monitoring system is beneficial to evaluate, retune and modify important devices such as controllers and protection systems.
STIPL held an awareness programme conducted by a delegation of ERLPT led by Dr. Narendra at the CEB auditorium at BMICH on June 7 with the participation of the CEB chairman, the general manager, members of the corporate management and engineers. Representatives from other leading private firms also attended the programme.
During this session, two units of Experimental Setup of Wide Area Monitoring System valued at US$ 60,000 were donated to the CEB. The system is to be installed on a ‘ Trial & Error’ basis one year.
