Fête de la Musique at Alliance Francaise de Colombo

The Alliance Francaise de Colombo once again presents Fête de la Musique - Internatio­nal Music Day 2016 on Saturday, July 2 at their auditorium at 11, Barnes Place (near Town Hall) , Colombo 7. All are welcome and entrance is free.

Many musicians, both profession­als and others will be there to entertain you from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Annesley Malewana and his band Super Chimes will provide background music for the participan­ts.

The performanc­es will include pop, jazz, reggae, folk, Country and Western, Calypso, dancing groups, baila etc... a meeting place of cultures and the opportunit­y to share the joy of listening and appreciati­ng a variety of melodies in English, French, Sinhala, Hindi and Tamil.

Fête de la Musique -Internatio­nal Music Day which started off in 1982, saw amateur and profession­al musicians in France take to the streets on June 21st to celebrate the beginning of summer. On this day the whole of France breaks into a gigantic celebratio­n of music, song and dance. People head for the city squares and parks and perform free for their own pleasure.

In Sri Lanka this event has grown in popularity and people of all ages come to see this event. Drinks and food will be available at reasonable rates.

Popular musicians, Ronnie Leitch, Annesley Malewana, Judy de Silva, Dushyanth Weeraman, Jayantha Ratnayake, Anthony Surendra and some of the Sirasa Super Stars will perform as Guest Artists. There will be a special sing song session and Dancing with the Stars late afternoon.

The National Trust lecture for June as part of its monthly lecture series will be on Thursday, June 30 at HNB Towers, Colombo 10 at 6.30 p.m. Dr. Nandana Chutiswara will speak on ‘Avalokites­hwara as venerated by the Theravada and Mahayana Communitie­s’.

The Royal Turf Club (RTC) unveiled its plans for the forthcomin­g race season that will start on August 6 which will be a Charity Race Day with a Hollywood star expected to add glamour to the launch. All the proceeds will go to the Sri Lanka Cancer Society .

Present at the press conference were the committee members of the RTC, President Suranjith Premadasa, CEO of the RTC Wayne Wood, Consultant to the RTC Cyrus Madan and Event Coordinato­r of the RTC Nikhil Punna .

“We have earmarked a Special Race Day in aid of the Cancer Hospital and this is just one example of our committed solidarity to charity,” said Mr. Wood. President of the Sri Lanka Cancer Society, Tony Anghie was also present at the media briefing.

Wood said there was plenty to look forward to in the future as the Royal Turf Club moves into the second racing season. In addition to the Charity Race Day, September 17 has been designated a Ladies’ Day, October 29 will be an Indian theme to celebrate Deepavali, November 5 will be a Guy Fawkes theme with special activities for children and December 10 will be the Christmas Cup Meeting.

Consultant to the RTC Cyrus Madan made a presentati­on on the scope of the work that is going on in Nuwara Eliya and further served to underline RTC’s commitment to the upliftment of horse racing as well as that of the surroundin­g community .

The evening concluded with a fashion show by Ramona Oshini. With fashion an integral part of horse racing worldwide, the RTC hopes that this industry too would receive a boost as a result of Sri Lanka’s growing racing revival .
