What Degree should I do?

-

Choosing the field of studies that you opt to do your degree in can be hard. You need to choose a course that you’ll enjoy and that will bring you one step closer to your career goals. To get to that point, you need to have researched your choices and assessed what you like about each course (and what you don’t).

Think carefully. Rethink even more carefully.

The subject area that you do your degree in will most probably determine your future. Once you have completed your studies, you will then work in that area. Therefore make sure that it is a subject that you will enjoy even after 50 years. Are you passionate about it? Would you enjoy waking up to it daily? This is a lifetime commitment and must be taken with adequate consideration.

Pay careful attention to skill requirements

Do you have what it takes to follow this path? If you hate the idea of mathematics, accounting may not be the area for you. Do not allow peer pressure determine what you are doing.

Consider your study destination options We Sri Lankan have many options in selecting our study destination. We can select to study in Sri Lanka or to go to another country. One of the main considerations here is your ( or your parents) budget. The coat must be cut according to the cloth!

Avoid picking a course just because it is popular

A phenomenon that is seen in Sri Lanka is the masses selecting to do a ‘ trending’ subject. We saw an influx of students studying information technology in the early 2000s. This was followed by a boom in the field of Business Management. Do not blindly follow the trends unless it suits you. This is your life. Just because your friends are selecting a subject doesn’t mean you should.
