Student life at NCHS

- The Lecturers and Staff

College life isn’t what many people expect it to be. The overload of reports and presentations invade your personal life to the point where, at the end of the day, you lose sleep over it. So when I joined Nawaloka College of Higher Studies, I knew exactly what I was getting myself into. Being a student of one of the most prestigious Universities in Australia, the Swinburne University of Technology, came bearing a great deal of responsibilities.

I still remember my first day at NCHS. A plethora of strange faces and nervous glances swarmed the building, along with the occasional friendly smiles from the people I assumed were the staff members. Unlike many, however, I knew what to expect. My judgments were merely based on assumptions and stories told by other people, so when the work started, little did I know, I was in for a surprise.

The lecturers and the staff members are tremendously supportive and are eager to guide the students throughout their journey at NCHS. Upon introduction, it was clear to all of us that the staff and lecturers are exceptionally trained, well qualified and experienced, most having achieved their postgraduate qualifications from prestigious universities both locally and around the globe. The staff members, eventually become your friends, and are equally helpful with your processes and make your university transfer hassle-free and swift.

Teaching and Assessment Methods

and use innovative teaching methods which makes learning exciting and easily comprehendible. The educational experience at NCHS would give the student a glimpse of what learning in an Australian University would feel like. Lecturers deliver each subject using the tutorials designed by the Australian Unit Conveners, therefore students will be learning exactly what is taught overseas.

Unlike other Colleges, assessment methods aren’t merely based on examinations at NCHS. They also include presentations, group projects and reports, facilitating students to diversify their extent of expertise. These methods ensure that there will be a series of methods in which students will be evaluated, while improving in the areas they lack skills in.

Facilities

Each classrooms boasts state-of-the-art designs and this, along with the library and study room enable ease for the students as they study without any discomfort. The computer lab accommodates a large number of students who are able to make use of it for educational purposes as they please. More importantly, NCHS includes one of the most resourced engineering labs in Sri Lanka.

The Student Lounge and the adjoined Cafeteria on the rooftop, however receives significant atten- tion by the students as this is the focal point where they spend their free time. Overlooking the beautiful Indian Ocean, this spot was one of my favorite places in the building. The rooftop is a major hub of stress relief amongst students; to be able to grab a cup of coffee from the cafeteria, sit down, chat with theirfriends and relax. During breaks students are always at a game of Pool, which is one way as to why the entire college knows each other, as this is the place that brings everyone together at the end of the day or during breaks.

Be a part of NCHS

Overall, my experience at NCHS has been an eventful one. To see Nawaloka College of Higher Studies grow day by day along with us from the start, has been a wonderful experience altogether. The day I first stepped into this building, I never thought I would value this place as much as I do now, because it was after I’ve spent my time here that I realized, the people you call family aren’t always the people you share blood with.
