Dr Muditha Jeevani Halliyadde was admitted to the United States Court System as an Attorney-atLaw in June this year, following the successful completion of her exams in the U.S.

Dr Halliyadde earned her Bachelor of Laws Degree with Upper Honours from the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo in 2000. She was a recipient of the AJ Cooray Memorial Award, for the Best Aggregate Student in 1997. She was admitted as an Attorney-at-Law to the Sri Lanka Supreme Court in June 2002. She came first in the Sri Lanka Foreign Service Competitiv­e exam in 2000, and rose to be a career Foreign Service Officer at the Ministry of External Affairs, serving as Sri Lanka's diplomat in Belgium and New York.

Dr. Halliyadde has two Master of Laws Degrees. One in Legal Theory from the Catholic University, Belgium and the other from Indiana University, where she also earned a Doctorate in Internatio­nal Law. Dr Halliyadde is fluent in four languages, Sinhala, Tamil, English and French. Dr Halliyadde, who hails from Kandy, completed her secondary education at Pushpadana Girls School Kandy, where she was the Games Captain. She was a National Table Tennis player representi­ng Sri Lanka at a number of National and internatio­nal tournament­s. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Halliyadde of Hindagala, Peradeniya.

“We had discussion­s on February 18, with University Grants Commission (UGC) officials, and again on April 8, with the UGC and the Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kirella and lastly on 20 May 2016 with HE Minister Lakshman Kirella and Finance Minister Ravi Karunanaya­ke, but nothing has happened,” he said.

He said, at the last round of talks, Minister Kirella had requested for a month's time to resolve the issues. However, even after 7 weeks, they have not received any redress, yet.

The SLUTUJC demands an 100% increase in the Monthly Compensato­ry Allowance, extension of the non-academic staff's retirement age by three years and to set up an insurance scheme for both the academic and non-academic staff. - Chrishanth­i Christophe­r
