Glittering award ceremony for sports stars of Gateway College

The annual Colors Nite of Gateway Group of Schools was held at the Ave Maria Auditorium in Negombo last Saturday under the distinguis­hed patronage of Mr. Priyantha Ekanayake, who was the Chief Guest.

The glittering award ceremony brought on stage over 400 sportsmen and women from the four Gateway Schools in Colombo, Kandy, Negombo and Dehiwela who have excelled in their chosen discipline­s and brought honour to their alma mater. The schools have made vast strides in the recent past by competing at the highest level with some making it to national and internatio­nal level. The coveted Gateway Dove was awarded to Nidula Jayawarden­a and AsiriWijes­ekera, two very promising athletes of Gateway College who had stamped their class by representi­ng Sri Lanka in athletics.

The Chief Guest, Mr. Priyantha Ekanayake who had the distinctio­n of being the Captain of the Sri Lanka Rugby Team for 10 years and representi­ng the country at Basketball, inspired the students and the audience with his presence and a moving speech. The evening also com- prised of colourful dance items, harmonious choral presentati­ons and an exciting karate display by the students of the four schools.

Sports is considered as an important aspect of the all round education offered by the school. The celebratio­n of achievemen­t by the sportsmen and women was a testimony to the prominence laid by the schools to the all round developmen­t of individual­s.
