Over 150 laid-off SL workers in Saudi demand compensation, refuse other jobs

- By Chrishanhi Christopher

The Ministry of Foreign Employment is in a quandary regarding action to be taken over the 150 Sri Lankan (SL) workers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

Minister Thalatha Athukorala said the laid-off workers are declining the Saudi government's offer to find alternative jobs.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Development of the KSA has offered to help find alternative jobs for these workers, and has launched a website, www.kawadir.com.sa seeking information on skilled expatriate workers who have lost their jobs or, are experiencing difficult working conditions.

Further, SL workers have indicated their unwillingness to take up alternative jobs, and said they will not leave the country without their salary arrears and compensation. About three major companies have 'closed shop' and left the country, due to the economic slow-down in the country.

The Saudi government had directed its passport dept to facilitate exit visas and other procedures for the affected workers. Over 10,000 Indian and SL workers have lost their jobs overnight.

SL Foreign Employment Bureau, Working Director and Spokesman, Upul Deshapriya said the workers have refused to come home immediately. “They have worked 10 to 15 years and are awaiting redress from the Saudi government,” he said.

Minister Athukorala said the SL Embassy in KSA is providing the workers with food while they continue to live in company accommodation. “We are spending US$ 50 per person per day,” she said.

She said the workers have all indicated they would ultimetly like to return home, and the Government will bring them down when they are ready.
