The University of Wollongong Australia is the place to be

-

The University of Wollongong (UOW) is ranked in the top 2% of universities worldwide* for its high quality, accessible research, and globally ranked as one of the world’s best modern universities, ranking 17th in the world in the QS rankings of universities under 50 years old.

The University of Wollongong has the expertise and experience to help students reach their goals, and prides itself on preparing people for emerging industries and future jobs, people who are ready to succeed in their careers and make a positive contribution to their communities.

UOW’s commitment to their students is evident in their graduates, who are recognised for their capability, quality and success in the global workplace. For the ninth year UOW has ranked in the top 1% of universities in the world in the QS World University Rankings Graduate Employers survey. This review rates institutions based on employers’ opinions of their graduates.

In Australia, UOW has outperformed all other universities in New South Wales in the 2016 Australian Federal Government’s Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT), and is home to five study areas rated best in Australia - Computing & Information Systems, Humanities, Culture & Social Sciences, Law & Paralegal Studies, Agriculture & Environmental Studies, and Teacher Education.

With connections to over 200 universities in 35 countries, UOW is truly an international university, with Alumni numbers standing at more than 131,000 globally. Students from over 160 nationalities experience a welcoming multi-ethnic community that helps them settle into the Australian lifestyle and strengthen their university experience.

Wollongong is a vibrant, multicultural city, situated on one of Australia’s most picturesque coastlines. Regarded as Australia’s ‘most liveable’ city, Wollongong is a university city that’s perfectly set up for student life. It’s inexpensive, easy to get around and it’s only a short 90-minute train ride to the middle of Sydney.

UOW is a research-intensive university with an outstanding reputation for its learning environments across a broad range of disciplines. From assessing the broader impact of pesticides used to control locust plagues; to designing more efficient batteries and building safe and durable roads and railways for faster and heavier traffic, UOW research demonstrates its experience and capability in engineering, electrochemistry, ICT and environmental sciences.

Many UOW research projects have been granted Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage grants. One example is the UOW linkage project ‘Enhancing the longevity of roads and rail tracks for freight’ initiated by distinguished Professor Buddhi MaIndraratna. Associate Professor Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn and Dr Ana Heitor will use compacted industrial waste materials such as coal wash and fly ash for use in road and rail construction. This will help create sustainable and more resilient transport infrastructure, to deal with the increasing demand for safe and durable roads and railways that support faster and heavier traffic.

UOW is also known for distinguished researchers such as Professor Gordon Wallace, Executive Research Director for the ARC Centre for Excellence for Electro materials Science who, along with his colleagues has come up with a way of creating layered 3D structures that mimic the brain more closely, using 3D printing. Having a 3D model will give scientists a more accurate image of what’s really going on in a brain, and Professor Wallace believes this will help propel research into diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Rewarding excellence through UOW Undergraduate Scholarships

“At the 2011 International Schools Athletic championship I set the under 19 record in the javelin throw, and as a former athlete striking a balance between studies and sport is vital for me. The University of Wollongong has an excellent recreation and aquatic centre (URAC) as well student centric facilities which are great for international students. UOW also gave me a platform to envisage my career goals of becoming an Engineer in a world class university with a reputation for excellence in research.

My interest lies in mastering the knowledge of power electronic systems in the Bachelor of Engineering and I am looking forward to a summer internship opportunity at the Chicago Freight Car Leasing Australia (CFCLA), a leading supplier of leased locomotive power and rolling stock to Australian rail operators

As a current student and an active member of the UOW Sri Lankan Student Society, I would recommend University of Wollongong to everyone who is aspiring to become successful in their life.”
