Wayamba University to host SLUG from Sept. 1 to 13
Sri Lanka University Games (SLUG) 2016 will be hosted by Wayamba University. This major sporting and cultural event of the undergraduates of state universities of Sri Lanka is scheduled to be worked-off from September 1 to 13.
The inaugural Universities games took place at the Preadeniya University with the participation of six universities featuring 20 sporting events in 1980. At this year’s edition 14 universities will participate and 11 SLUG Games were held once in three years with the exception in 1989. Last time the event was held at the Moratuwa University in 2013.
Embracing SLUG’s 2016 motto ‘Go One Better’ this sports festival allows university athletes from all 14 universities to display their talents in sports in the true spirit of sportsmanship and friendship.
This year’s games will be participated by University of Colombo, University of Peradeniya, University of Moratuwa, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Kelaniya, University of Jaffna, University of Ruhuna, Eastern University, Rajarata University, Sabaragamuwa University, Wayamba University, South Eastern University, Visual and Performing Arts and Wellassa University.
Undergraduates will battle for 35 Men’s and Women’s championships in Athletics, Cricket, Rugby, Soccer, Swimming, Baseball, Netball, Hockey and Badminton to be held in 10 venues.
For the first time a parade carrying the Sports Torch took off from Jaffna University on Friday and to reach the Wayamba University on September 1 passing all other state universities. – L.R.
