Theatre and post-war Lanka
Rajitha Dissanayake’s tenth theatrical production ‘Nethuwa Beri Minihek’ (A Man Much Needed), a play on post-war social and political situation will premiere at the Lionel Wendt theatre on September 2 and 3 at 7.00 pm.
‘Nethuwa Beri Minihek’ revolves around the family of Jayantha, a Sinhala businessman who supported the war and benefitted financially from close ties with the political estbalishment. With the relatively improved democratic atmosphere in the country, Jayantha faces new problems specially with his questionable conduct in the past and arrival of his son with a Tamil friend who is looking for his missing mother.
Started with ‘Sakwadawala’ in 1994, Rajitha Dissanayake ranks among the top original playwrights to emerge in the last two decades and has produced popular and award-winning plays like ‘ WeerayaMerila’, ‘SihinaHoru Aran’, ‘ApahuHerenna Be’, ‘Bakamoona Veedi Basi’ and ‘Adara Wasthuwa’. His scripts focus on burning socio-political issues and have drawn crowds, sparked debate, won awards and toured internationally.
The cast of ‘Nethuwa Beri Minihek’comprises Dharmapriya Dias, Shyam Fernando, Nadeeshani Peliarachchi, Bimsara Premaratne, Pasan Ranaweera, Anuradha Mallawarachchi, Nalin Lusena, Charindra Chandrasena and Kasun Chathuranga.
The music design is by Kapila Poogalarachchiand, make-up by Priyantha Dissanayake. The lighting is by Ranga Samarakoon and costume design by Nalin Lusena and Samadara Mabulage. Vijith Nuwan will be the stage manager, assisted by Nalin Lusena.
