Kelaniya Medical Faculty to host silver jubilee exhibition on Sept. 23-20

To mark the Silver Jubilee of the Kelaniya University Medical Faculty, the faculty is organising a medical exhibition titled 'Medikel 2016' aimed at profiling avenues of medicine and medical practices. It will be held on September 23-29 at the faculty premises at Ragama.

Prof. W. Abeywickre­me, Chairman, Exhibition Committee, told reporters at a briefing to announce the event that its theme is 'Medical Knowledge for a Healthier Tomorrow' and it would educate the public on various specialtie­s of the medical field plus the newest inventions in e-technology.

The exhibition is divided into several zones. Growth, developmen­t and reproducti­ve health zone will provide knowledge on all the stages of life with explanatio­ns on childhood, adolescent years, newly married/starting a family phase, pregnancy stage and the geriatric population.

The emergency management and first aid zone provides informatio­n on unseen threats inside the house, covering the aspects of poisonous animals and plants, precaution­s for accidents and response that needs to be given in an emergency. Mental health provides informatio­n on mental wellbeing and strategies that could be adopted mentally to face common challenges.

A special zone will be there for the public to witness unseen technologi­cal marvels of modern medical science and in specialize­d medical expertise.

Prof Abeywickre­me, on the sidelines of the briefing, told the Business Times that this university was the first university here to establish DNA and Forensic Labs. The Faculty has also started a Thalassemi­a unit and has a Department of Disabiliti­es Studies.
