KDU 9th International Research Conference on September 8-9
The 9th International Research Conference (IRC) of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) will be held on September 8 & 9, under the theme “Professional Integration for a Secure Nation”.
Many local and foreign academics, professionals and practitioners whose research is in diverse fields, will participate in the conference.
The Faculty of Engineering has organised its session under the sub theme “Professional Integration for a Secure Nation through Engineering Innovation”. The plenary session of this Faculty chaired by Deputy Vice Chancellor, University of Moratuwa, Prof. R.A. Attalage, will be held on the 8th, under the patronage of four distinguished academics namely, Prof. Dev Ranmuthugala, Prof. Torsten H. Fransson, Prof. J.J. Wijethunge, and Eng. W.D.A.S. Wijayapala.
Prof. Dev Ranmuthugala will present a paper on “Hydrodynamics Design Consideration for Underwater Vehicles”. He is currently serving as Head, Hydroacoustics, Maritime Division, Defence Science & Technology Group, Department of Defence, Australia. and Professor in Maritime Engineering, Australian Maritime College (AMC), University of Tasmania.
Prof. Torsten H. Fransson will deliver a speech on “Transforming Engineering Education towards Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the 21st century”. He is currently Educational Director of the “InnoEnergy Knowledge & Innovation Center” (KICInnoEnergy) of the EU, newly installed “European Institute of Innovation and Technology” (EIT), a consortium of 13 high-level universities and 30 companies in Europe.
Professor in Civil EngineeringUniversity of Peradeniya, Prof. J.J. Wijethunge will speak of his wide experience in the field of Disaster Management: “Towards a secure nation: How safe are we against cyclone-induced sea surges?” in his plenary speech at the IRC-2016.
Chairman- Ceylon Electricity Board, Eng. W.D.A.S. Wijayapala will talk on “Coal vs LNG based Power Generation, and challenges ahead of the predicted climate issues by the end of the 21st century: Sri Lankan context”. He is a Chartered Electrical Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, and an International Professional Engineer.
On Day 2 of the conference, 20 technical papers will be presented in 4 different sessions.
These include sessions under the theme of “Power Energy & Communication” which will be chaired by renowned Senior Prof. H.Y.R. Perera of the Dept of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa and one on “Hydrodynamics & Mechanical Engineering” chaired by Vice Chancellor- University of Vocational Technology, Dr. T.A. Piyasiri.
A session on “Civil Engineering” will be chaired by Director- Research & Development Division, RDA, Dr (Mrs). H.L.D.M.A. Judith, while the concluding session on “Numerical Simulation and Optimization” will be chaired by Senior LecturerDept of Mechanical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Dr. Nirosh Jayaweera.
