NSBM is a fully state owned academic institution which has been granted the degree awarding status by the UGC of Sri Lanka and also affiliated to world renowned universities. NSBM offers over 25 attractive and practically versatile degree programmes in the disciplines of Computing, Business and Creative Studies. At present, NSBM is one of the largest institutions for the students who lack a few points to get into a State university, with over 6000 student population at the moment. NSBM has developed a state of the art Green University Town in Homagama, in a land of 26 acres, to accommodate the growing demand and in view of providing a holistic university education. The Green University Town is scheduled to be operational for the next intake in October and is truly the first of its kind in Sri Lanka.

NSBM School of Computing has descended from the NIBM Computer Division that has pioneered the computer education in Sri Lanka. The School of Computing presently offers over ten degree programmes covering the full spectrum of the computing discipline; namely degrees in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Networks, Computer Security, (Management) Information Systems, and Multimedia. The school also houses a qualified full time faculty that is supplemented by a panel of carefully selected visiting faculty both from the industry and the academia. The school is equipped with state-of-the art lecture theaters and laboratory and IT facilities to provide enriching learning experience to our students. At the Computing School we are constantly striving to improve the student learning opportunities, to produce well equipped and balanced computing profes- sionals to serve the ever changing demands of the dynamic computing industry.

The Green University Town in Homagama provides state-of-the art infrastructure for the School of Computing, including purpose built lecture theaters, cutting edge computing and related laboratories and generously built student gathering areas and meeting rooms for productive and enriching student and staff interactions - an environment where learning and education is meant to be an exploratory and self-enriching inspirational journey.

Software Engineering is the most popular sought after area of computing presently at NSBM. NSBM offers its own, University Grants Commission approved and accredited BSc (Hons) in Software Engineering degree programme. This is a 4 year degree programme with the option to exit at the end of the third year without an Honors award. This is an excellently structured programme 100% confirming to the latest international (and local) curriculum guidelines for Software Engineering. The First year is mostly common to all computing degrees which is designed to lay a strong computing and mathematical foundation to the students on which they can develop more specialized learning related to their specialties. During the second and third years students cover the core software engineering subject areas including computing essentials (programming and related core computing skills), mathematical and engineering fundamentals, software modeling and analysis, requirements analysis and specification, software design, software verification & validation, software process, software quality, security, and professional practice. Students have the option to exit with a 3 year BSc in Software Engineering degree at this stage. Students those opt for a 4 year Honors degree gather more specialized learning on diverse subject disciplines including entrepreneurial skills. The entry requirement for this degree is having passed the GCE/GSE/ Edexcel (A/L) in the Physical Science stream or SAT score of 1200.

BSc (Hons) in Management Information Systems (MIS) degree is another flagship product of the NSBM. MIS is a versatile computing discipline which is a mixture of computing and business. More precisely, MIS focuses on the strategic use of Computing and IT for Business (Process) Innovation and success. During the first two years of the programme students focus mostly on computing and technology and students develop core computing competencies including strong programming and computer based solution development skills. The thorough computing skills and focus, developed during the first two years of the programmes is a unique character of our MIS awards as opposed to numerous IS degrees offered by other universities and institutes. The business focus of the MIS awards are primarily to understand the strategic role IT can play in the business worlds. MIS students are fully equipped to architect and develop revolutionary IT solutions to business enterprises, capitalizing on both matured and contemporary computing and communication technologies that allows to strategically position the enterprises at the forefront of their competition. The diverse subject areas covered by the MIS awards include computer programming (C, C++, C#, Java, J2EE), database systems (Oracle, PL/SQL, MySQL, SQLServer, T-SQL), web technologies (HTML, CSS, java script, PHP, ASP.net, XML), software engineering, computer architecture and system software, computer networks, mathematics, human resource management, financial accounting, business policy & strategy, IS strategy, management and implementation etc. To the date this programme has recorded almost 100% graduate employability. The entry requirement for this 4 year degree programme is having passed the GCE (A/L) in any stream.

We also offer a 4 year BSc (Hons) in Computer Science degree in collaboration with the University College Dublin (UCD). The Computer Science degree programme is structured in two parts. The first two years of the programme is offered by NSBM, where students cover majority of the core computer science body of knowledge, including computer organization, networking and communications, information management & security, programming languages, software engineering, system software, HCI and computational mathematics. This is an intensive study period where students are challenged to develop the essential computing domain specific knowledge and skills along with generic analytical, problem solving and learning skills. The last two years of the programme is offered entirely by the UCD lecturers at NSBM premises.

The Computing School offers three (3) further degree programmes in collaboration with the Plymouth University of the UK; BSc (Hons) in Software Engineering, BSc (Hons) in Computer Networks and BSc (Hons) in Computer Security. These are 3 year full-time degree programmes and named as honors degrees in line with the academic conventions of the UK. The first two years are common to the students of all the three awards while students follow more specialized subject content relevant to their specializations during the 3rd year. From the 2nd year onwards students follow the Plymouth University academic calendar and 50% of the subject modules are delivered by the Plymouth University lecturers themselves at the NSBM premises.

School of Computing also offers an innovative BA degree programme in creative multimedia in collaboration with the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in Malaysia. Limkokwing University has a reputation in offering practically significant study programmes and attracts over 30,000 students from over 165 countries worldwide. BA in Creative Multimedia is a three year degree programme targeting the students with artistic talents and empower them with technological and professional skills to produce creative and innovative communication solutions. Equal emphasis is placed both on creative and artistic element as well as on the technology, development methodologies and tools. The programme is delivered over 3 years, and addresses the areas of 2D animation and imaging, 3D modelling and animation, Video and motion graphics and interactive web design.

Entry requirements for the Degree programmes with foreign university affiliations, GCE (A/L) or equivalent is the minimum and those without A/L has to follow the NSBM’s Foundation programme or the Certificate programme as a requisite. All the computing programmes offered at NSBM enjoys close to 100% employability of their graduates at the time of convocation.
