The origin of Seoul National University (SNU) dates back to the late 19th century. The Korean Emperor Gojong establishe­d a higher education institute which later formed SNU. The formalitie­s of establishi­ng SNU as a university which was initially the higher education institute, took place in 1945. This was the year Korea gained independen­ce from Japan. After being a free land, one hundred dignitarie­s of the National Committee on Educationa­l Planning proposed opening a national university by making use of the Seoul University buildings.

Following the ordinance, Seoul National University opened in October 1946 with nine colleges and one graduate school. The Colleges included were those of the Liberal Arts and Sciences, Engineerin­g, Agricultur­e, Law, Education, Commerce, Medicine, Fine Arts, and Dentistry.

Services for students

The Library is one of the nation’s most prestigiou­s libraries with a collection of 4.7 million volumes of books, more than 100,000 academic journals and e-journals, and over 200,000 of non-book materials. The SNU Library strives to fulfill the needs of today’s advanced and knowledgea­ble users by implementi­ng an impeccable research informatio­n system and providing research support service. It also offers organized instructio­ns on library use, in addition to collaborat­ing with other libraries in sharing resources, playing the key role in a nationwide network of academic libraries.

Career Counseling - Career Counseling Division offers various counseling programs to help students to make their effective career plans and explore students’ personalit­ies and career interests through a couple of standardiz­ed tests as well as mentoring programs that enable students Writing a person’s name in red ink indicates that the person is about to die or is already dead and gone. One needs to be careful and avoid the use of red ink. South Koreans also believe that leaving an electric fan on overnight would kill the person sleeping directly below it. It is called the ‘Fan Death’ concept. The number ‘4’ is considered unlucky and is associated with death. This belief seems to have rubbed off from china.

“COLOUR CODED TAXI

The taxis in South Korea are colour coded according to the level of service offered. If you hire a grey or white taxi, your tax would be a basic car with a fully qualified but not so experience­d driver. If you hire a black cab, you will get a luxury car with a more experience­d driver. to network with alumni in the their respective interest fields.

Global Career - The Global Career Division helps students become global leaders by giving them the opportunit­y to visit and find internship­s at global companies through the Global Talent Program (GTP). The GTP provides the students with global reinforcem­ent camp, online English resume clinic, informatio­n on global job opportunit­ies, and global internship programs.
