‘ District Scouts Annual Rally
The Annual District Rally of the Negombo District Scouts ‘Meegomu Puraborette2016’was held from September 15-18, at Dutugemunu Maha Vidyalaya, with the participation of about 650 Scouts including 450 Cubs from schools in the Negombo, Katana, Minuwangoda and Divulapitiya Electorates.
Chief Commissioner (CC)- Sri Lanka Scouts Association, Pro. Nimal de Silva declared open the event.
The CC addressing the gathering, said, “This is a very important occasion for children, as it focuses on them and gives them ample opportunities to equip themselves with skills to face future challenges and develop leadership qualities, team spirit and life values."
He further said, "I appreciate the dedication of the Cub Akelas, Scouts Masters, Officials and all those engaged in organising this event.’
Negombo Zonal Director of Education, K.A.C. Anton Fernando who was the Chief Guest on Day-2, addressing the gathering, said, "We have realised the importance of having Scouting in the School Curriculum. We are already allocating funds on other school Curriculum Activities. Now we are considering how some funds could be utilised on your programmes too. I am very much pleased to see the large number of Scouts gathered here.I do wish that this number will increase in future."
Outgoing Negombo District Commissioner (DC), Elmo Rowel said, "In a journey towards a target, the focus is to achieve the objectives. So don’t waste your time answering unnecessary questions on your journey, that will delay achieving your target."
Rear Admiral (Rtd) Rohan Amarasinge speaking at the Closing ceremony said, "A movement like this will no doubt develop the skills of children, which will, in turn, help them face future challenges."
Chief Organizser- Assistant DC Lakshan Perera expressed his pleasure at the present increase of the Scouts over the past years, saying that, this year, when compared with previous years, they have the highest number of participants. "Our District Rallies, over the past years, have evolved, providing the Scouts Community better opportunities to add value to their lives," he said
Another milestone for the Negombo District Scouts will be the 75th Anniversary in 2019.
