CMA Sri Lanka
CMA Sri Lanka was incorporated by an Act of Parliament and therefore, recognized as the national Professional Management Accounting qualification. The objective of CMA is to produce quality management accountants to serve all sectors of the economy and develop and upgrade Sri Lankan accounting practices to be on par with global standards. CMA syllabuses are regularly upgraded enabling their students to be armed with most modern accounting knowledge.
CMA Flexibility
CMA course is comprised of four skill Levels plus the Integrative Case Study as the fifth Level. The first four levels have 17 core course units and 4 skill course units. In the Level 1, students can sit either for all core course units together or they can complete core course units in different sittings. This flexible method would be extremely useful for students who are engaged in university or other form of education or for those who are working and have time con- straints. Level 2 and 3 offer another form of flexibility which could be made use of by confident and hard working students. They can take core course units from both levels together and this would lead to completion of the course in a shorter time than usual. However, there are conditions such as the maximum number of core course units that can be taken at one sitting.
Enroll into the CMA Fold
As the CMA is confident that their courses are capable of instilling all required subject knowledge in students, it can afford to be flexible on entry qualifications to assist those employed and registered with universities.Plus, as the national professional management accounting body, CMA does not want to see students deterred from realizing their career dreams due to inability to enter universities. Students with three passes obtained at the Advanced Level Examination in any stream can join CMA to pursue a professional accounting career. They even can approach CMA, pending Advanced Level results.
What is the medium?
The CMA has no restrictions of the medium for the first two levels. Therefore, students could select a language of their choice but those in the Sinhala medium and Tamil medium will be able to develop the knowledge of English during this period. Up to Level 3 students can follow their courses and sit for exams in the language they are more comfortable with, English, Sinhala or Tamil. By the time they reach level 3, students will be able to gather necessary English knowledge.
Financial Affordability
Money talks first in this commercial world, but not so for the CMA. All CMA charges are within the reach of majority of Sri Lankans. In short, compared to foreign management accounting qualifications, becoming CMA management accountant is 1/ 10 th the cost of foreign exams.Even study packs are provided at a very reasonable rate.
Recognition of CMA Qualification
CMA is the f ull member of International Federation of Accountants ( IFAC) and South Asian Federation of Accountants (SAFA).
Quality of the course has made it possible to win recognition for the CMA qualification nationally and internationally. Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants ( UK) and Institute of Financial Accountants ( UK) offer considerable exemptions for CMA qualification. Other institutions that offer significant exemptions for CMA are CMA- British Colombia, Canada, CMAOntario, Canada and CGA- Canada.
University degree in two years
The Open University of Sri Lanka offers exemptions for CMA students who have passed the Managerial Level to study for Bachelor’s Degree in Management Studies. There are many CMA students who have made use of this opportunity and completed the four year degree in two years.
