Excel as an International Student

- Spend wisely and save money Measure your English language ability Get to Know People Get Involved in University Activities Don’t Be Afraid to Ask

The idea of going to another country to study is appealing. I am often told by students as to how they plan to go and live together with friends. They imagine that it will be a paradise devoid of parental interference or guidance. Yet the reality is often different to the dream

Living abroad is expensive and money is often a stress factor to students. Some won’t hesitate in sponging off parents, yet others will be more careful on how to budget. One of the main steps in financial management is to resist temptation. Don’t buy everything you see when you first arrive, no matter how useful things seem. Stick to necessities.

As Sri Lankans, English is a second language to us all. The speaking, writing, reading and listening skills in English will be invaluable. Before you leave Sri Lanka, measure your English language ability through a language proficiency test. If you do not have the adequate level, join an institute that teaches a credible English programme and brush up on your skills. Study the new environment Google is your best friend. Research the culture, environment, people and society of the new country. Find out about the food habits and if needed, stock up on Sri Lankan favorites with a long shelf life such as SeeniSambol.

A common mistake is waiting for others to come and talk to us. This doesn’t always happen and then the misconception arises that the people of that country are not friendly. The truth is that you need to talk to people first. Initiate conversation. Once you make friends, you will enjoy your new life.

The best way to make friends is to get involved in university extra curriculum activities. Join clubs and societies. You will meet compatible people with the same interests as you. They may result in lifelong relationships!

Never be afraid to ask questions. Humans in general are helpful and will be more than delighted to lend a helping hand, if you just ask.
