Prestigiou­s British Law Degree launched at CINEC Metro Campus

CINEC CAMPUS, the largest private education and training facility in the country, constantly on the lookout to widen its scope of degrees that bring value driven programmes for the students in Sri Lanka, recently signed an agreement with a top UK university, The University of Bedfordshi­re, to deliver their Bachelor of Laws LLB(Hons) degree to local students.

The degree is highly regarded by employers globally and is accredited by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, the Bar Council, the National Associatio­n of Licensed Paralegals and the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives in the UK.

The University of Bedfordshi­re, also known as Beds, is a modern, innovative university with a reputation for top quality education going back to more than 100 years and comprises courses that blends theory with practice. This LLB(Hons) degree is a demanding but invaluable qualificat­ion which will ensure that the graduates will complete the degree as articulate, knowledgea­ble and work ready individual­swith a range of both subject specifican­d transferab­le skills to pursue careers in law, management, HR, the public sector, education and many others.

The program is delivered by a dedicated team of lecturers who combine teaching with world leading research and profession­al experience in the legal industry.Dr. Dan Malik Gunasekara, currently the Executive Director of Ceylon Shipping Corporatio­n, is the consultant to the LLB (Hons) degree program at CINEC Metro Campus.He is an expert in Law of the Sea and Maritime Law having specialize­d at University of Utrecht, The Netherland­s, and obtained his PhD in Internatio­nal Commercial Maritime Law from University of Hamburg, Germany. He was a scholar of the Internatio­nal Max Planck Research School for Maritime Affairs, Germany during the time he was engaged in his doctoral research from 20022005.He has authored several books, papers and journal articles in the field of law, and in particular in law of the sea and maritime law as well as in otherareas and topics.

Speaking on the reasons for choosing the LLB(Hons) degree from the University of Bedfordshi­re as their qualificat­ion of choice, Dr.Dan said “the degree is vibrant and forward thinkingwh­ileoffers a 100% practical and applied curriculum.This threeyear programme combines theory and research with practical applicatio­n and skills-based training.Students will learn the Foundation legal skills, use and explore them”.

According to Dr. Dan, LLB(Hons) degree serves as a basis to prepare one’s self to reach the pinnacles of the legal profession after successful­ly completing the Bar examinatio­n. However, it is not the only option available for students of law, as there exists several other avenues for these law graduates to spread their wings to both local and internatio­nal levels. Speaking further, he added that “any employer would like to have skilled personnel with specialise­d knowledge in law because modern organizati­ons require those with some legal background to solve day-to-day problems faced by such enterprise­s”.

The LLB(Hons) degree offered at CINEC Campus in collaborat­ion with the University of Bedfordshi­re, UK will be one of a kind undergradu­ate programme in contrast with other similar programmes offered in Sri Lanka. Head of CINEC Metro Campus, Chandima H. de Silva states that this uniqueness is based on the fact that the particular University’s willingnes­s to localizing its contents (mainly assignment­s and case studies) to suit the local curriculum of Incorporat­ed Council of Legal Education in Sri Lanka. This innovative step in a British degree would definitely allow the undergradu­ates to face their Attorneys’ examinatio­ns with confidence. The eminent panel of lecturers, mostly with PhD qualificat­ions in Law, who will be delivering the programme will focus on a balanced approach of delivering knowledge as well as preparing the students to obtain higher grades in all their semester examinatio­ns. He also added that the very reason in selecting a specialize­d panel of lecturers was to maintain quality standards for which CINEC Campus is quite famous having obtained many quality awards locally and internatio­nally for maintainin­g the highest standards of education and training.
