As business attempts to keep up with the speed of globalization, employers are demanding a new set of professional skills. The new classification of these skills can be considered to be “broad-based,” requiring a more holistic understanding of the business environment.

Business degrees geared for the future :In view of these developments , Monash University has designed their business degrees to prepare students as future business leaders with a global perspective. Delivered in Sri Lanka through Universal College Lanka( UCL) all degrees are developed around a business platform to provide programmes that incorporate leadership, people management, business operations and the dissemination of innovative practice and entrepreneurship.

The programs begin with the end in mind and are geared towards aligning with industry-level skill requirements. Through partnerships with industry professionals acting as subject-matter experts/ advisors, Monash ensures that their degree programs remain current, offering a range of business degrees that give valuable insight into business environments and train future business leaders to deal with current world problems in real-life situations. All degrees includea mix of coursework and research-based programs designed to develop their theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Therefore the Monash business degree is focused on the development of employable graduates enabling them to reach senior management positions in different industries both locally and internationally.

Degrees relevant for Millennials:As businesses in the future will shift to embracing Millennials and their likes and desires, Mr. Subasinghe affirmed that the Monash business curriculum is constantly updated with teaching methods continuously improved to meet the challenges of educating Millennials.

Dr. DevangiPerera (Program Coordinator and Lecturer in Economics subjects)explained that “these include increased use of IT in the class room by the flip class room approach and virtual learning environments such as “Learning Catalytics”. With Millennials affinity to technology who have grown up with smart- phones, laptops and social media and are used to having access to a wealth of information at their fingertips using a flipped classroom approach in teaching sessions makes it more interesting and engaging in that they can use technology to study material and learn at their own pace, while allowing for more interactive sessions in the classroom.”

A focus on entrepreneurial skills:Another essential characteristic sought by employers in top companies is entrepreneurial skills where the graduate works in new and innovative ways which enhances efficiency. This can be termed as “intrepreneurship”.

The essential skills of both entrepreneurs and intrepreneurs such as self motivation, creativity, thinking out of the box, innovativeness, excellent presentation and communication skills, leadership, persistence, problem solving, analytical skills and the ability to inspire others, are all ingrained within Monash graduates by a rigorous and progressive training program which starts from the 1st year of the business degree thatcommences from the foundation to the Diploma level.

In all subjects students have to undertake a heavy workload of assignments, group presentations, quizzes, and tests. They are trained to meet strict deadlines and to multitask by working with a variety of subjects at the same time.
