There was Junior Rugby on a grand scale

Over 1400 youngsters representi­ng 88 teams from different schools around the country were actively involved in the Milo Junior Rugby Tournament which was held on October 8 and 9 at the Racecourse ground in Colombo. The tournament, organised by Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Associatio­n (SLSRFA), was mainly focusing on the promoting the game among youngsters and encourage them to get more engaged in physical activities. These kind of activities, according to SLSRFA officials, is essential and helpful for the kids who are thriving to reach the next level as healthy citizens and competitiv­e schoolboy Rugby players. The target age group was youngsters below 12.

The two-day tournament was not about winning or losing according to Damitha Kulatunga who is in charge of Corporate Affairs and Communicat­ions at Nestle Lanka, where Milo is their major energy drink brand.

“Milo has been fuelling sports from grass root level for over three decades, and has a strong heritage. The Milo Junior Rugby Tournament is another gigantic initiative from Nestle Lanka to promote the game of rugby and encourage physical activity amongst kids,” Kulatunga stated.

The event was overall a success considerin­g the enthusiasm of youngsters, who were engaged in physical training activities as well as matches that help build up camaraderi­e among all, from different schools and regions of the country. To make it more attractive over 5000 spectators, mainly members of coaching staffs from schools, school officials and parents took part in the two-day event.
