Eight slicers off to the United Kingdom

Ahighly confident contingent of four men and four women carrom players accompanie­d by two officials will be leaving for the United Kingdom today to participat­e in the 7th World Carrom Championsh­ip scheduled to be held from November 7th to 11th in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

This world event held once in four years was hosted in 2012 by Sri Lanka ending up in second place behind India. Nishantha Fernando kept the national flag flying high when he defeated Baratha Dasan of India to be crowned as the World Champion.

Sri Lanka Men's team will be led by 12 time national champion and Swiss League World Champion Chamil Cooray who entered the record books by winning the title for eight consecutiv­e years and having experience in internatio­nal exposure from 2003. Nishantha Fernando, M. Sheriffdee­n, M. Shaheed and Cooray were members of the Sri Lankan team that won the 2008 World Championsh­ip in France.

National champion Joseph Rositha is at the helm of the Women's team which comprises Chalani Lakmali, Yashika Rahabadda and Arosha Wickremasi­nghe.

Speaking to the Sunday Times Susantha Fernando, one of the Managers told that the team is in the pink of touch and confidence in winning both their team events, Doubles event, single events and the Swiss League event.

Has won the national championsh­ip for 5 years. Representi­ng Sri Lanka since 2009. No.2 in national ranking. Made her internatio­nal debut in 2010. Currently ranked No.3. Representi­ng the national carrom team for over a decade. University student. First represente­d Sri Lanka in 2011. Currently ranked No.4 nationally.
