Over 150 graduate from Australia’s Swinburne University-Nawaloka College

It was an evening of celebratin­g great achievemen­t as one of Australia’s most highly recognised seats of higher education, Swinburne University of Technology which is in partnershi­p with the Nawaloka College of Higher Studies conferred degrees in Engineerin­g, IT and Business on 150 graduates who are now form the elite alumni of Swinburne University. Ninety graduates were conferred with Diplomas, while sixty students also successful­ly completed the Foundation Year in Science & Engineerin­g and Business. Swinburne University and NCHS awarded scholarshi­ps to the best performing students in recognitio­n of high achievemen­t in the highly competitiv­e arena of global academics, which today has become extremely competitiv­e internatio­nally.

Having mooted the campus just two years ago, Chairman of NCHS Jayantha Dharmadasa mentioned that the event itself is momentous given that it coincides with the second year anniversar­y of NCHS. “Our ethos from the beginning has been to support the government’s efforts and vision to make Sri Lanka an internatio­nal hub of excellence in higher education and today’s graduation conferring that cap and gown of graduatesh­ip on 90 young people, reiterates that fact that we have been an active contributo­r to spurring an education system that will grow economic growth through a strong knowledge base.”

While congratula­ting the cohort of graduates, Chief Guest Vice Chancellor of Swinburne University Linda Kristjanso­n reflected that each graduate had fulfilled the requiremen­ts of a demanding course of study with focus and discipline. “Swinburne is committed to being a nationally and an internatio­nally recognised institutio­n in science, technology, design, business and innovation, where our education programs and our research are relevant to the world community. We are dedicated to this goal because increasing­ly, our graduates are required to work globally and establish successful internatio­nal careers and our researcher­s routinely collaborat­e with scholars from around the world.”

Keynote Speaker Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswa­my reflected similar thoughts on his own personal educationa­l experience adding, how a foreign education will positively enhance a student’s life. Dr. Coomaraswa­my stated, “NCHS serves to reduce the impact on a family’s budget…this is thanks to the Nawaloka Group”. Moreover Dr Coomaraswa­my emphasized that ‘’the quality of our education will be a key determiner of this country’s future’’ and appealed to the graduates to return to Sri Lanka and work towards building of the nation.

Both the Australian High Commission­er in Sri Lanka Bryce Hutchesson and Dean of Studies of NCHS Dr Alan Robertson congratula­ted the graduates, with the High Commission­er mentioning that the graduation celebrates their commitment to continuous learning. “You have demonstrat­ed ability and readiness to acquire the knowledge and skills that will enhance your career prospects and prepare you for new challenges.” Says Robertson: “This ceremony recognises the success of our major goal, to develop students with the knowledge and skills to progress towards new levels in their education and career pathway.”
