Veterans' National Volleyball Tournament from Dec. 2 to 4

The Veterans' National Volleyball Tournament will take place on December 2, 3 and 4 at the Ratnapura Public ground. Sri Lanka Volleyball Veteran’s Association is conducting the event and is being conducted by the Ratnapura District Veteran’s Association.

There are four age categories in the event. They are: Over 35 Women, 40-49 Women, 50-59 Men and Over 60 Men.

Entries for the three day event will close on November 15. All applications should be sent to A.A.Jayatissa,Tournament Secretary, Sri Lanka Volleyball Veteran’s Association, Gampaha Aluthgama, Gampaha. Tel: 0714444430.

A press conference took place regarding the above event which was conducted by Mervyn Fernandopulle, President, Sri Lanka Volleyball Veterans Association (SLVVA).

Five districts: Kandy, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Nuwara Eliya and Badulla are presently affiliated to the Sri Lanka Volleyball Veterans Association. Plans are afoot to establish district association in all parts of the island. This was stated at the press briefing.

The Veterans Association consists of those who are over 60 years and they hope to keep it going in order to maintain a healthy nation. They hope to conduct school level coaching camps and to impart the knowledge they possess to youngsters.

It is hoped that 60 veterans teams will enter the competition this year.

The champion and runners-up teams will be in line for trophies and cash awards. The best players too will be chosen in the various age groups.

The cash to conduct this tournament has been raised by the veterans as there are no sponsors for the event.
