Tips to become a Powerful Public Speaker

-

Fear of public speaking is the most common of all phobias. It’s a form of performance anxiety in which a person becomes very concerned that he or she will look visibly anxious and maybe even have a panic attack while speaking.

However, like everything in life, a few simple tips and tricks will help. Practice leads to perfection!

What do I say?

Writers block is quite often present when it comes to writing a speech. The mind goes blank. All rational thoughts disappear! If you can relate to this situation, you are not alone.

The first step in overcoming the fear, is often to take a deep breathe. The deep breathe will send oxygen where it is needed and have an immediate calming effect. Once this is done, get a piece of paper and pen, and write your thoughts down. There doesn’t have to be a sequence or thought pattern. Just write down whatever that comes to your mind. This is the first and most crucial step in designing your masterpiece!

Structure

Once you have your rough ideas, it is time to structure your speech. There are many types of structures that you can experiment with.

The most common is the tra- ditional three pronged structure, consisting of an introduction, body and conclusion.

The introduction is crucial as this is the point at which the audience decides as to if they are going to listen to you or not! Start with a bang – relate an anecdote, quote or whatever you think would capture the interest. The body of the speech should have a logical sequence. The conclusion is the part that the audience would remember the most when they go home, therefore make it memorable. Give a message, wish or a moral that will tie up your speech.
