Over the years the demand for high quality Medical education has increased all over the world. Globally the demand for Medical Doctors has increased more than 22 percent during the last 10 years according to WHO (World Health Organization). Despite many adverse career and industry forecasts, Medical Doctors are still among the highest paid in global career chart. Some experts estimate that as many as one out of every ten openings for Medical Doctors worldwide are unfilled due to lack of supply.

In a developing country like Sri Lanka Medical Doctors are in more demand today than ever before.

Statistics revel that United States faces a shortage of as many as 90,000 physicians by 2025, including a critical need for specialists to treat an aging population that will increasingly live with chronic diseases, the association that represents medical schools and teaching hospitals.

The nation’s shortage of primary care physicians has received considerable attention in recent years, but the Association of American Medical Colleges report predicts that the greatest shortfall, on a percentage basis, will be the demand for surgeons — especially those who treat diseases more common to older people, such as cancer.

In Sri Lanka, SLMC (Sri Lanka Medical Council) is the only body which recognizes the foreign medical degrees and the medical graduates. Its recognition allows the medical graduates to sit for the qualifying examination called ERPM (Examination for Registration to Practice Medicine) in Sri Lanka. Upon returning from overseas medical graduates from recognized overseas Medical colleges are eligible to sit for these examination and thereby fulfill the current SLMC requirements to register in Sri Lanka.
