Science and CR Legends emerge champs at annual Rugby Rumble

Science College and CR Legends emerged winners in their respective categories at the annual Royal Rumble Schools Old Boys Tag Rugby Carnival held at the CR and FC ground recently.

Science College beat CR Reds to win the Over-20 Cup championsh­ip with a scoreline of 5-0 as Rajans, the team representi­ng Dharmaraja College, beat Lumbini College by 5-0 to win the Plate championsh­ip in the same age category. Isipathana College Greens overcame S. Thomas’ College Sharks 5-0 to claim the Over-20 Bowl championsh­ip.

In the Over-40 age category CR Legends, a combinatio­n of former CR and FC players who also turned out for reputed schools, beat Kingswood College by 5-0 to win the Cup title. Dubai Warriors, a team from the Middle East formed by Sri Lankan expatriate­s based there, beat Lumbini College Speed 5-0 to claim the Plate championsh­ip. Royal College Golds overcame St. Joseph’s College Blues 10-0 to win the Bowl championsh­ip.

Held for the third consecutiv­e year, the carnival will took place on November 19 at the CR and FC ground. This year Rugby Rumble Tag Rugby Tournament consisted of several teams from leading Rugby playing Schools, namely D.S. Senanayake, Isipathana, Zahira, Lumbini, Trinity, Royal, S. Thomas’, St. Joseph’s, Ananda, Wesley, Kingswood, St. Benedict’s and Science colleges. The teams comprised of members from different eras, while two female players were also included to add some spice to the scrum.

Three mixed school teams and one overseas team also joined in the battle. The overseas team was Lanka Warriors from Dubai. The teams were packed with some of the renowned stars of yesteryear who represente­d College and Club teams in Colombo and Kandy. They were Roger Rodrigo, Kevin Rasquino, Thushara Bandara, Harin Fernando, Shamin Perera, Dinuk Wijeratne, Aruna Uduwelaged­era, Chaminda Rupasinghe, Thusitha Peiris, Dharshana Munasinghe, Kamal Mahendra, Nilfer Ibrahim, Nalaka Weerakkody, Alex Nishantha, Ifthikar Ahamed, Pavithra Fernando, Hiran Ted Muttiah, Rajiv Ganapathy, Rienzie Fernando, Sean Dwight, Ravi Gunaratne, Chula Dharmadasa, Vipula Dharmadasa, Jehan Canagaretn­a, Ravindra Vekadapola, Hiran Doranegama, Rohantha Peiris, Rohan Chinthaka, Azararth Deen and Manoj Rambodavil­age. All participan­ts were kitted out in Agoal Rugby Jersey’s with their school team colours.

Rugby Rumble promised to be an unforgetta­ble experience packed with nothing but cheer and fun, for the whole family to enjoy. The Rugby Carnival was held in associatio­n with sponsorshi­ps from Mobitel, Agoal Internatio­nal, Red Bull, CocaCola, and Litro Gas. Nalin Perera, the Chief Operation Officer of Mobitel, Indika Amarasuriy­a, the Marketing Manager of Mobitel and Roger Rodrigo, the former Sri Lanka scrumhalf gave away the awards.
