Sahan props Ananda with an unbeaten 106

St Peter’s was in a strong position against St Sebastian’s when play stopped for lunch on day two in their Under 19 inter-school cricket encounter played at Bambalapit­iya.

The second day’s play saw St Peter’s who had a lead of 210 runs at the end of day one declaring their first innings on their overnight score of 289 for 6. They had St Sebastian’s in a spot of bother at the lunch break with the score on 110 for 3 needing a further 100 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

The opening day’s play saw the Peterite bowling pair of Shivan Perera and Santhush Gunatillek­e running through the St Sebastian’s batting with the duo sharing nine wickets between them to bundle the home team out for a paltry 79.

Later the Peterites were guided by Lakshina Rodrigo who made a 138 and Shalitha Fernando a 94 helping them end day one in a strong position of 289 for 6.

St Joseph’s was making steady progress against Royal on day two in the match played at Darley Road. Joes made a bold reply of 221 for 4 in reply to Royals score of 291 for 9 declared when play stopped for the lunch break.

The Josephians score came on the back of a fine knock of 73 by Cameron Duruge which was supported by useful knocks from Nipun Sumanasing­he, Shevon Fonseka and Jehan Fernandopu­lle.

An unbeaten 106 by Sahan Suraweera helped Ananda end session one of day two with success of not having lost a wicket as from their overnight score of 28 for 1. They went into the lunch break on 130 for 1 which was in reply to S. Thomas’s score of 287 for 9 declared in the match played at Ananda Mawatha.

An impressive bowling return of 8 for 20 by Mohamed Hashmi was in vain as it could not prevent from Gurukula MV taking a first inning lead in the match played at Maradana. Gurukula MV taking first lease of the wicket was bowled out for 132 but they fought their way back to restrict Zahira for a score of 129.

Maris Stella kept up their dominance of day one against De Mazenod in the match played at Kandana. In form batsman Lasith Croospulle steered them on day one and on day two saw Ashan Fernando, Naveen Fernando and Dushan Guruge cracking half tons for Maris Stella to go into the lunch break with a formidable score of 366 for 7 in reply to the Mazenodian­s 195.

St Anne’s Kurunegala dominated proceeding­s in the match against St Peter’s Negombo played at Kurunegala while in the two matches that got underway today saw St Thomas' Matale being bundled out for a meager 69 by St Thomas' Matara and De La Salle Mutwal ended the morning session on 78 for 6 against Christ King College at Ja-Ela.
