Vavuniya, Badulla, Kegalle and Ratnapura Districts recorded a high number of schools each with 1 to 15 students. At present, there are 250 schools with 15 students or less, and 522 schools with less than 30 students each. Kegalle, Ratnapura, Kurunegala, Anuradhapu­ra, Kandy, Badulla, Jaffna and Nuwara Eliya Districts top the list of schools with less than 100 students each.

The Report said that 38.7% of the total schools in the country have classes only up to Grade 5 or 8.

Sri Lanka has a total of 10,162 schools with a student population of 4.1 million. Female student population ( 2.09 million) is slightly higher than male students (2.05 million). The average Teacher:Student ratio is 1:18. The Census Report stated that 18 new schools have been opened after June 2015.

Of the total number of students 3,034,305 (73.2%) are in the Sinhala medium, 1,028,032 (24.8%) study in the Tamil medium and 80,993 (2%) in the English medium. Of the English medium students, majority are in the Western Province, followed by Central and NorthWeste­rn Provinces.

The country has 353 National schools with the highest in Colombo, Kandy, Galle and Kurunegala Districts. Although National schools represent a mere 3.5% of all schools, almost 16% of students are in these schools, the report said.

At present, there are 105 private schools, of which, 36 are fee-levying, 44 non-fee-levying and 25 special education schools. A total of 136,407 students and 6,872 teachers are in private schools, mostly located in Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara Districts.
