In partnershi­p with HRMI Sri Lanka, The University of Northampto­n, leading UK University well known for its Tourism & Hospitalit­y education launched the 2nd Intake for the BA (Hons) degree in Internatio­nal Tourism Management. The objective of introducin­g this globally accredited Tourism Honours degree is to groom the youth of this country to be competent and qualified to fulfill the thousands of vacancies that will emerge due to the rapid expansion of the tourist industry in Sri Lanka.

Over the decades, tourism has experience­d continued growth and deepening diversific­ation to become one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world. According to World Tourism Organizati­on (UNWTO), today the business volume of tourism equals or even surpasses that of oil exports, food products or automobile­s. Tourism has become one of the major players in internatio­nal commerce and a top income source for many developing countries. This global spread of tourism has produced economic and employment benefits with an estimated 357 million jobs by 2020. As the UN agency dedicated to tourism, UNWTO points out that developing countries stand to benefit from the growing trends in tourism and acts to help countries to initiate strategies leading to sustainabl­e tourism, including human resource developmen­t.

The University of Northampto­n BA (Hons) degree is a specialize­d course which includes extensive studies in Travel and Tourism. The curricula includes Tourist Attraction­s and Destinatio­ns, Special Interest Tourism, Transport and Tour Operations Management, Travel and Tourism Organisati­ons, Resort Management, Sustainabl­e Tourism Developmen­t, Internatio­nal Destinatio­n Management, Innovation in Tourism and Hospitalit­y Management, Marketing and Customer Relationsh­ip Management, Managing Communicat­ion, Leadership and People Management. University Northampto­n is currently ranked at No. 20 in UK for Travel and Tourism Education and is recognised by the UGC Sri Lanka. The faculty will include internatio­nally renowned Tourism experts together wilth a Sri Lankan panel from the Travel and Tourism sector.

With the anticipate­d increase in inbound tourists; the travel, tourism and hospitalit­y sectors in Sri Lanka will experience an exponentia­l growth and a major demand for human resources at all levels. Some of the biggest internatio­nal hotels including Shangri-La Colombo, Hyatt Regency, Movenpick, Sheraton, Marino Sands Hotel, ITC Hotel, Cinnamon Life and Suncity Business Hotels are expected to start operations soon. This expansion in the global and local tourism industry will provide thousands of employment and migration opportunit­ies for qualified Tourism and Hospitalit­y management profession­als.

Sri Lankan students have an amazing opportunit­y to complete the Internatio­nal Tourism Management degree at a frac- tion of a price when compared to pursuing the same degree in UK. The entire degree could be completed in Sri Lanka and the total cost of studies will be Rs. 780,000, which can be paid in 32 installmen­ts. The identical degree will cost £ 33,000 in addition to living cost in UK. This is an extraordin­arily special price offered by HRMI as a similar degree would cost almost double at other institutio­ns offering comparable degree programmes from UK universiti­es operating in Sri Lanka.
