Australia: Paradise to the Sports Enthusiast

-

An integral part of the Australian culture, sports can be traced to the early colonial period. Sports have shaped the identity of the country, as it gained popularity through major sporting events such as the Ashes and the Melbourne Cup.

Organized Sports

To the delight of Sri Lankan sporting fans, Australia boasts of most of the sports that Sri Lankans enjoy. Cricket, Australian Rules football, rugby union and horse racing are among the earliest organized sports in Australia. These sports have such popularity that they have even inspired some of the great movies that the country is renowned for. These include The Club, Australian Rules, The Final Winter and Footy Legends.

Professional Sport Leagues

There are a number of professional sport leagues in Australia, including the Australian Football League (AFL) (Australian rules football), the Big Bash League (BBL) and Sheffield Shield (cricket), the National Basketball League and the Women’s National Basketball League, the A-League and the W-League (soccer), the Australian Baseball League, the National Rugby League (rugby league), Super Rugby (rugby union), the ANZ Championship (netball) and the International V8 Supercars Championship (touring car racing).

International Events

As a nation, Australia has competed in many international events, including the Olympics and Paralympics. The country has also twice hosted the Summer Olympics in Melbourne (1956) and Sydney (2000), as well as the Commonwealth Games on four occasions.

Students are often offered discounted rates to witness these games first hand when they occur.
