Camillus House is overall champions at St. Benedict’s

The annual St. Benedict’s College Inter- House Athletic Meet was concluded at the College grounds on January 27 with Camillus House winning the Rev. Bro. Alexander Cyrillus Challenge Shield, donated by his devoted pupil Saman Upasena, for the overall championsh­ip with 421 points. Cassian House finished overall second with 357 points, followed by Luke House and Claude House.

The meticulous­ly organised Meet was a fierce competitio­n with some of the best young athletes in Sri Lanka competing to bring honour and glory to their respective houses, cheered on loudly by their supporters. The standard of athletics was of a very high level, with the most outstandin­g performanc­es coming from Shalika SanthushWe­erasinghe who won the Best Performanc­e Award for Track Events in Senior Category for his winning timing of 21.80 seconds in the Under-17 200metres event and Mahela Heshan Jayatissa for Field Events for his clearing a distance of 13.76metres in the Under-20 Triple Jump.

The best performers among the Juniors were Pramuditha Mihirange in Track events for his achievemen­t in the Under15 100metres Hurdles and Sudev Mithakshar­a in Field events for his performanc­e in the Under-15 Long Jump. The Relay Championsh­ip was won by Camillus House with Luke House coming in second place.

One of the key parts of the event was the colourful scene, with the playground packed with athletes and other schoolboys, parents and families having the privilege of witnessing a magnificen­t gymnastic display by the college gymnastic squad, followed by the march past by the athletes of the respective houses,

The chief guest, distinguis­hed Old Benedictin­e Rohan Rodrigo, the Chief Country Officer of Deutsche Bank in Sri Lanka, spoke with emotion about his school days from 1967 to 1981 and how the education he received at St. Benedict’s made it possible for him to reach the No.1 position of the Global Bank in Sri Lanka. He congratula­ted Senanayake (Claude House) and Anuja Prabashwar­a (Cassian House)

Shammi Lakshan (Luke House) Bro. Director Henry Dissanayak­e and the School Management for the phenomenal performanc­es of the school’s athletes in 2016 and wished the team all the success in the future. Bro. Henry Dissanayak­e, Rodrigo and Renuka Rodrigo gave away the main awards and Master Ravintha Perera, the Head Prefect, delivered the vote of thanks.
