The third and final day of the much acclaimed Rotaract Champions League (RCL) 2017 concluded on February 19 at the University of Colombo grounds. The final day featured the track and field events, while Day 2, February 18 featured the outdoor sporting events where Rotaractors from all over the country came together to celebrate fellowship through sports.

RCL unveiled over the span of three days as it featured tense yet exciting encounters of a wide array of sports ranging from indoor events such as Badminton to Futsal, to outdoor battles of the likes of Cricket and Tag Rugby and the Track and Field events. Rotaractors representing different communities and institutions came together for their Rotaract Clubs and battled out for glory. Rtr. Darsha Hewapanna from the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya believed that RCL managed to bring all Rotaractors to one place and enhanced the fellowship of these young hearts. The glory stood for the entire Rotaract movement as the competitors fostered bond of fellowship and sportsmanship. The second and third days of the RCL were challenged by the thunder showers but Rotaractors were not to be defied. The competitions continued despite the heavy rains as the young changemakers took it up as a challenge and chose to rebel against the odds.

The importance in the event is that the bond created at the event between Rotaractors will support in their process of Change making in creating sustainable relationships. Rtr. Kavinda Bandulasena, the President of the Rotaract Club of SLITT shared his view on the event, “RCL made the youth bond together in making decisions which would be a huge investment to the country’s future”.

Rtr. Lahiru Aberathne from the Rotaract Club of Centennial United, stressed upon the importance of bring- ing all Rotaractors together to show their sportsmanship, talent and team spirit. It is a diversion from the usual contributions made by Rotaractors as change makers in their own communities. Lahiru went on to emphasize that RCL proves that Rotaract is not only about giving and but also about taking something back with you. The Zonal representative Rtr. Danesh Kumar from the Rotaract Club of Chunnakam saw RCL as an opportunity to create new bonds to bridge the nation, “This is an open gateway for unity of Sri Lankan Rotaractors to be recognised”.

RCL provided a platform for Rotaractors to build and renew bonds among themselves and enabled them to use sports as a tool for peace and development. It is an integral part of the vision to Rotaract in Sri Lanka and Maldives in leading up to act as an all in one hub for youth development. The award ceremony of the RCL will be held soon. The RCL is the annual sports extravaganza organised by the Rotaract District for Sri Lanka and Maldives (RI 3220), with the expectation of bringing together young changemakers of the country and to create a platform for them to showcase their talents.
