Results of Novices Swim meet not released

- By Susil Premalal

The Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union has decided not to release the results of the Novices Swimming Championships held at the Sugathadasa Swimming Pool on Friday and yesterday.

The main reason for this is that they had received several complaints that school swimmers were not suited for the Novices Meet had taken part in the meet as they had competed in previous swim meets. There were several such boys and girls who had done so at the Novices Meet.

The meet was conducted in the normal before the complaints started pouring in.

The meet was for under 11, under 13, under 15 and under 19 girls and boys. There were 1696 swimmers in all from 123 schools who had taken part at the meet. Their results not released by the organisers of the meet – The Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union.

Regarding the issue the Sunday Times inquired from Migara Gunatilleke, Secretary of the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union. She admitted that the incidents were factual. “We have received several complaints that swimmers who were not novices had taken part in the meet. We plan to carry out a series of investigations and in due course the results will be announced. We will leave no stone unturned to do the needful for the novices.”

“A time trial will be conducted for schools under 19 swimmers – girls and boys – in the first week of April at the Hillwood Swimming Pool in Kandy. This was held in conjunction with the novices meet which concluded yesterday. A lot of schoolboys and schoolgirls took part in it and it was conducted successfully. This is the first time that a time trial was held before the Junior Nationals”, concluded Migara.
